Life is a Dance. The Physical Universe is basically playful. The whole point of dancing is the dance. You don’t aim at a particular spot in the ballroom. - Alan Watts
Other research into children’s learning in science being carried out in the last decade has focused on the role of the primary teacher. Many findings, for example Harlen et al (1995), have pointed towards problems linked to primary teachers’ insufficient scientific knowledge (content knowledge), passion, enthusiasm and lack of confidence in teaching Science. Some studies have criticized the level of the content of some areas of the content of some areas of primary science. Murphy, Beggs et al (2001) showed those who experienced compulsory school science from ages 11-16 could not correctly answer in some primary science topics in tests, which had been written for 11 year-olds.
Today’s Learners are : • Multi taskers • Digitally literate • Mobile Savvy and ‘connected’ 24/7 • Experiential and socially inter-connected • Visual and Spatial Learners • Fast response times and typically short attention spans
Why do we need to teach with technology? • The power to engage learning inquiry through technology • Since students are already tech savvy , we should motivate them to use it as a learning tool. • ICT, and technology is a part of our daily lives now, we are just assisting students by providing them with a vehicle to enhance learning
Role of ICT in Science • What is ICT ? Range of information and communication eg – computers suite, macbooks, digital cameras and video cams, printer, scanner, data projector and visualizers, digital loggers, digital microscopes, interactive whiteboards and OHPs. • Network or ISP availability Router/SAP • Ever-increasing impact on teaching and learning and used wisely, is a useful tool to integrate into student inquiries. • ICT provides opportunities for the enhancement of learning and help them in their inquiries and develop their conceptual understanding through the Science Process Skills. • ICT skills should be already developed and learned (I believe quite evidently so in most cases), in order to support the needs of individual learners in their inquiries et al • ICT can support both the investigative (skills and attitudes) and more knowledge-based aspects (concepts) of primary science. It can help focus on the development of a rich learning experience for the children.
Process Skills • Using apparatus and equipment Skill of knowing functions and limitations of various apparatus, and developing the ability to select and handle them appropriately for various tasks. • Communicating Skill of transmitting and receiving information presented in various forms – verbal, pictorial, tabular or graphical
Process Skills • Inferring Skill of interpreting or explaining observations or pieces of data or information. • Predicting Skill of assessing the likelihood of an outcome based on prior knowledge of how things usually turn out. • Analysing Skill of identifying the parts of objects, information or processes, and the patterns and relationships between these parts.
Process Skills • Generating Possibilities Skill of exploring all the alternatives, possibilities and choices beyond the obvious or preferred one. • Evaluating Skill of assessing the reasonableness, accuracy and quality of information, processes or ideas. • Formulating hypothesis Skill of making a general explanation for a related set of observations or events. It is an extension of inferring.
Experiential Learning and Field Trips : • Some venues of walks are Labrador Nature Reserve, SungeiBuloh Nature Reserve, BukitTimahNature Reserve and The Singapore Botanic Gardens, Bull Frog Farm, Hydroponics Farm, NEWater Plant, Science Centre,
The Use Of ICT In IPW Science : • Can document the learning • Can provide the opportunities for rapid feedback and reflection • Access to a broad range of information sources • Allow students to store, organise and present learning. • Encourages large audience and networking and conferences
