This research explores the seamless interaction between co-located devices, emphasizing immediate interoperability in non-work activities. As devices evolve into network-capable tools, we address the challenges from a human-computer interaction (HCI) perspective, focusing on efficient data sharing rather than complex interactions. Our study includes prototype development, field evaluations, diaries, and interviews to understand user experiences. Through this work, we aim to surface the importance of immediate response in device interoperability and establish innovative interaction designs for multi-device environments.

Immediate Interoperability Between Co-located Devices Henrik Sørensen
Background • Network infrastructure allows for device interoperability
Background (continued) • Challenges from an HCI perspective • Focus on data sharing over interaction Example: Text between devices • Somedevices have evolved into network capable devices
Research Objective • How can we do more seamless interaction between co-located devices? • Hypothesis: ”Immediate” interaction is essential to interoperability for co-located devices in non-work activities
Method • Prototype development • Field evaluation • Diaries • Interviews
Software Innovation • Possibilities have been created by the infrastructure development • Prototype as solution first design
Scenarios • Observe: Own experiences, discussions with other peers, workshop • Problematize: Simple tasks are tedious, overhead on connecting devices • Envision: Metaphors • Develop: Scenarios depicting activities facilitated by the prototype
Contribution • A prototype of a system exploring device interoperability in non-work settings • Document the importance of immediacy in relation to device interoperability • Explore interaction design for multi-device environments
