  2. Stanhope has been there for three years. • Vicars son. • Organised and efficient. • “He was a skipper of Rugger at Barford, and kept the wicket for the eleven. A jolly good bat too”. (Pg 11) • When the boys at school were drinking and smoking Stanhope ‘gave them a dozen each with his cricket stump’ (Pg 13) • Chose to stay when he could have left. (Pg 27) • Changed. • He put work before his health. (Pg 21). It is NOT surprising… (Act one)

  3. It’s not surprising (Act 2) • P56 When Hibbert complains of neuralgia Stanhope offers to do their duties together. “ shall we go together?” • Stanhope feels remorse when the colonel mentions sending Raleigh on the raid p53 “its rotten to send a fellow who’s only just arrived”

Its NOT surprising (Act 3) • He’s a good officer because he controls and orders well. “ Keep your men against the back wall of the trench as long as the shells are dropping behind” (page 98) • Stanhope takes care of Raleigh after Raleigh gets injured in the big attack. He refers to Raleigh as “Jimmy” . “It’s all right, old chap; it’s just the shock.”

  5. Quick tempered/ Easily angered. (Pg 25) • Deceitful. Threatens to censor letters (Pg 29). • Alcoholic (Pg 27). “ Without being doped with whisky- I’d go mad” • Ignores Raleigh • Doesn’t make him feel welcome. “ How did you - get here?” (Pg 18). • He’s unforgiving. (Pg 19). It IS surprising…

  6. It IS surprising.. (act Two) • P46, Stanhope tries to snatch Raleigh letter ‘(trembling) Give me that letter!’ • P56/57 Stanhope threatens Hibbert when he claims to have neuralgia. “ if you went id have to shoot you.”

  7. It IS surprising (Act 3) • He is not particularly friendly to Raleigh after the raid has killed Osborne. “Must you sit on Osborne’s bed” (page 80) • He uses abusive language towards Raleigh. “You bloody little swine!” (page 91)

  8. Summing up So… to sum up… should Stanhope be seen as a hero? We think that Stanhope would be a suitable hero away from war. At war he gets stressed. This causes him to loose his temper quickly and to turn to drink to calm his nerves. However it isn’t surprising that Raleigh thinks of him as a hero because he is unaware of how Stanhope changes at war. Raleigh has looked up to Stanhope since he was very young. Judging by the amount of points we have for both arguments… it would be easy to suggest that Stanhope could be a good hero because he has more good influence points than bad ones, therefore overall he is a good influence.
