Standard Deviation. Chapter 6.6.3. Standard Deviation. It is the measure of dispersion that gives us an idea of how the values are related to the mean value. A small deviation implies that most values are close to the mean A large deviation implies that the values have a large spread.

  2. Standard Deviation • It is the measure of dispersion that gives us an idea of how the values are related to the mean value. • A small deviation implies that most values are close to the mean • A large deviation implies that the values have a large spread.

  3. Find the mean and standard deviation of the numbers • 3, 4, 4, 7, 10, 11, 12, 12, 13, 15 • Use your calculator • Remember mean is x and standard deviation is  • mean = 9.1 •  = 4.06

  4. Find the mean and standard deviation of the numbers • 3, 4, 4, 7, 10, 11, 12, 12, 13, 15  = √(164.9/10) Or 4.06

  5. Now find the mean and standard deviation for both boys and girls

  6. Boys’ info • Mean = 7.04 •  = .774

  7. Girls’ info • Mean = 7.36 •  = 2.19

  8. Standard Deviation of a sample vs. whole • It is often impossible to find the mean and standard deviation for a whole population. • If we are finding the standard deviation of a sample we want to use the info of x from our GDC. • If we are finding the standard deviation of a whole from our sample, then we want to use the info of Sx from our GDC.
