  1. Innovate.Improve.Grow. WEAVER: HEXAPOD ROBOT WITH 5DOF LIMBS FOR NAVIGATING ON UNSTRUCTURED TERRAIN.

  2. CSIRO Energy CSIRO delivers solutions that enhance Australia’s economic competitiveness and regional energy security while enabling a transition to a lower emissions energy future. CSIRO’S NATIONAL ENERGY CENTRE NEWCASTLE, AUSTRALIA Innovate. Improve. Grow.

  3. Energy research facilities National Solar Energy Centre Australia’s R&D Hub for Concentrating Solar Thermal (CST). Rock Mechanics Laboratory in Perth, testing for exploration, development production for the oil & gas industry. The National Geosequestration Laboratory in Perth, provides critical research capability that can be deployed globally to help reduce the risks and costs of subsurface carbon dioxide storage. Renewable Energy and Stored Energy Integration Facilities in Newcastle, demonstrating how electricity networks will work in the future and allowing CSIRO to evaluate new grid technologies. HVAC Performance Test Facility evaluates prototypes and commercial products at rated conditions or across the full range of transient operating conditions. Centre for Hybrid Energy Systems A collaboration hub and test facility in Melbourne. Gas Processing and Conversion Facility in Perth, is a fully automated, nonstop, industrially relevant gas processing research facility. Photovoltaic solar cell and panel testing Facility in the National Renewable Energy Centre in Newcastle. Gasification Facility In Brisbane, supporting the production of power, hydrogen, fuels and chemicals. Innovate. Improve. Grow.

  4. Key capabilities Low Emissions Technologies Technology pathways for solar and low emissions renewable and coal-based technologies and hydrogen energy systems. Coal mining CSIRO develops technologies to improve mine safety, reduce fugitive emissions and maximise the wealth from coal resources for Australia. Oil, Gas and Fuels CSIRO is enabling the next wave of oil, gas and fuels investments in Australia. Grids and Energy Efficiency Systems CSIRO develops models and tools for government and industry decision makers facing trade-offs between cost, emissions, risks, and social acceptance of new technologies. Onshore Gas CSIRO is reducing exploration and production risks and improving CSIRO's understanding of onshore gas resource characterisation. Innovate. Improve. Grow.

  5. CASE STUDY Reducing energy consumption in commercial buildings THE CHALLENGE Heating and cooling office buildings is one of the biggest costs for business. Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems account for between 40-50 per cent of a commercial building's energy use and contributes 34.7 megatons of carbon dioxide emissions every year. CSIRO RESPONSE CSIRO’s Opticool technology significantly reduces energy consumption by intelligently altering a building’s HVAC control system according to settings for cost savings, occupant comfort and energy efficiency. RESULTS The technology results in energy savings of 12–30 per cent in commercial buildings and could reduce HVAC energy consumption by up to 45 per cent. Opticool technology was commercialised by Building IQ and controls approx. 15 million square feet of floor space in Australia and the United States (2014), including New York’s Rockefeller Centre. Innovate. Improve. Grow.

  6. CASE STUDY Helping China reach clean energy targets with solar thermal technology CSIRO has partnered with Chinese company Thermal Focus to license its low-cost heliostat technology, with a shared revenue stream back to Australia to fund further climate mitigation research. This follows China’s announcement to produce 1.4 GW of CST by 2018, and 5 GW by 2020. This would double the world’s installed CST plants. The licensing agreement with Thermal Focus follows CSIRO's successful international solar thermal partnerships with Japan's Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, and the Cyprus Institute and Heliostat SA in Australia. CSIRO’s solar thermal heliostat technology will help China deliver its clean energy targets. Innovate. Improve. Grow.

  7. CASE STUDY Longwall automation - Improving mining safety and productivity The Longwall Automation system uses specialised remote guidance technology to continuously steer the longwall equipment by plotting its position in three dimensions. The system removes personnel directly from hazards to improve the safety of the process. This new automated process has provided positive economic and social impacts for the coal mining industry and its employees, including: • improved safety conditions for longwall mining equipment operators • uptake into more than half of Australia’s underground longwall coal operations • increased productivity delivering economic benefit up to 10 per cent • commercialisation and licences for the automation technology for five global companies. CSIRO, in partnership with the coal industry, developed an underground automation system that isolates people from mining hazards while improving productivity. Innovate. Improve. Grow.

  8. CASE STUDY Capturing CO2 from power generation and industry Capturing and storing carbon dioxide (CO2) prevents large volumes of emissions from entering the atmosphere. CSIRO, AGL Energy (AGL), Brown Coal Innovation Australia and Japan’s IHI Corporation are partnering on the PICA Post-Combustion Capture Research Project. The project will evaluate innovative processes using gases drawn from AGL Loy Yang brown coal-fired power station in south-eastern Victoria. This research program is targeting a 40 per cent reduction in energy use of current CO2 capture processes, which may accelerate the adoption of this important low-emissions technology. Innovate. Improve. Grow.

  9. CASE STUDY UltraBattery The UltraBattery has turned the conventional lead-acid battery; a 150 year-old energy-storage system — into a dynamic technology for storing electricity and powering vehicles. The system combines the everyday lead acid battery and a supercapacitor. It is an economical, super‐fast charging battery with long‐life power. It is 70 per cent cheaper to make than batteries with comparative performance and can be made in existing manufacturing facilities. It was used by Honda in its Odyssey Hybrid model and has been commercialised by Ecoult. The UltraBattery is being tested in rural India by the Institute of Transformative Technologies and battery manufacturer Exide Industries. It has the potential to improve energy security in the world’s second largest country by population and reduce reliance on diesel generators. Dr Lan Lam, the primary inventor of the UltraBattery, an economical, super fast-charging battery with long-life power. Innovate. Improve. Grow.
