4. How does God want us to use his name?

5. The Second Commandment • How could we summarize this commandment? • Love for God's name

6. What is God's name? • LORD, Jesus, Holy Spirit …? • Everything God has revealed about himself in his Word.

7. What God’s People Don’t Want to Do • Exodus 20:7 You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

8. What does God want us to avoid? • Use God’s name in vain • Carelessly • Needlessly • For an evil purpose • Misusing God's name • "Oh my God!" • "Oh my gosh!“

9. What does God want us to avoid? • James 3:10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.

10. What does God want us to avoid? • By cursing • Condemning someone or something • "God damn it!“ • Cursing is wishing evil on someone or something

11. What does God want us to avoid? • 1 Samuel 17:43,45 [Goliath] said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?" And the Philistine cursed David by his gods… 45 David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied."

What does God want us to avoid? • Mark 6:21-23 On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. 22 When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.” 23 And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”

What does God want us to avoid? • 1 Samuel 28:6-7,11 He inquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets. 7 Saul then said to his attendants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her.” 11 Then the woman asked, “Whom shall I bring up for you?” “Bring up Samuel,” he said.

What does God want us to avoid? • Matthew 15:4-6 "For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’ 5 But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is a gift devoted to God,’ 6 he is not to ‘honor his father’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition."

What does God want us to avoid? • Acts 5:1-11 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2 With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet. 3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4 …You have not lied to men but to God.”

20. What does God want us to avoid? • By teaching false doctrine • By hypocrisy • Pretending to be a believer, deceiving others

21. What does God require of us? • Psalm 50:15 …Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.

22. What does God require of us? • Prayer • Especially when we are in trouble or need something!

23. What does God require of us? • Psalm 103:1-2 Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. 2 Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits…

24. What does God require of us? • Psalm 118:1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.

25. What does God require of us? • Prayer • Praise and give thanks • Praise Jesus so others can hear!

26. Why don't I want to misuse God's name? • Psalm 103:1-3 Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. 2 Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits— 3 who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases…

27. Why don't I want to misuse God's name? • God gave his name to save me. • I love him and his holy name. • I want everyone else to love him and his name too!

28. The Third Commandment • How could we summarize this commandment? • Love for God's Word and worship

29. How does God want us to honor his Word?

30. Words to Know • Sabbath • Rest • Keep holy • Set apart for God and worshiping him

31. What does God require? • That we set apart time for him, his Word, and worshiping him.

32. Why? • Matthew 11:28-29 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

33. Why? • To have rest from our sins.

34. Why? • John 8:47 He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.

35. Why? • Psalm 122:1 I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD.”

36. Why? • To have rest from our sins. • To GLADLY hear and learn his Word.

37. Why? • Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

38. Why? • To have rest from our sins. • To GLADLY hear and learn his Word. • To get together with fellow believers.

39. Why? • Psalm 100:2-3 Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

40. Why? • To have rest from our sins. • To GLADLY hear and learn his Word. • To get together with fellow believers. • To publicly worship and serve God.

41. Why do we love God's Word and the Sabbath Day? • 2 Peter 3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

42. Why do we love God's Word and the Sabbath Day? • We want the rest Jesus gives. • We want to grow in God's love and our knowledge of the Bible.

43. Why do we love God's Word and the Sabbath Day? • Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

44. Why do we love God's Word and the Sabbath Day? • We want to serve each other. • We want to publicly praise God.

45. What is the right day for worship? • Colossians 2:16-17 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.
