“Types of alcoholic beverages with potentially particular appeal to minors (ABPPAM)” • Working definition: alcopops, ready-to-drink mixtures (RTDs) and designer drinks; flavoured beers, ciders and coolers; alcoholic energy drinks and high caffeinated alcoholic drinks; alcoholic gels and ice creams
What we promised to cover: • Mapping the market • Supply, demand, determinants of consumption (incl description of marketing strategies, regulatory environment) • Country- and product category-based case studies • Germany, Spain, Poland (quantitative analysis) • Product-based case studies: Flavoured drinks, energy drinks, designer drinks • Information sources, gaps and barriers and how to overcome them
Some issues/questions for discussion: • Access to and value of commercial sales data? • Trends and patterns of consumption of ABPPAM, esp in comparison to consumption of traditional alcohol sources (overall decrease[?] but increase of high risk consumption – how much driven by ABPPAM? What role for ABPPAM as a precursor for general alcohol consumption) • Are there specific adverse consequences of ABPPAM consumption? • How to measure “marketing exposure” (incl. via social media)? • Effectiveness of policies specifically targeting ABPPAM (egalcopop-tax)? • Extent and (in-)effectiveness of self-regulation in relation to ABPPAM? • What would be your ideal policy solution, and why? (Do ABPPAM require a specific approach or does general alcohol prevention in youth suffice?)
Any even distantly relevant information – quantitative and qualitative, multi-country and single-country – would be most appreciated!m.suhrcke@uea.ac.uk
