  3. Lesson objectives • In this lesson you will investigate the: • How health and safety regulations impact upon the manufacturing processes

  4. Health and Safety regulations: • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 - empowering act for HSE. • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) 1988. Regulation 2: definitions of substances hazardous to health and regulation 7: preventing and controlling exposures • Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992. Regulation 10: proper use of protective equipment and regulation 11: loss and defects. • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992. Regulation 7: emergencies and danger areas. • Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.

The Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 1999 • Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations 2009 or CHIP, which came into force on 6 April 2009. • United Nations Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) The aim: One chemical, one label - worldwide. • Export and import of dangerous chemicals (PIC). New customs code for export of chemicals subject to the PIC Regulation EC 689/2008. • REACH 2007. Is a new European Union regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of CHemicals. It came into force on 1st June 2007 and replaces a number of European Directives and Regulations with a single system.

  6. Task:- Read and make notes/ refresh your knowledge on H and S legislation using Nelson advanced science or Nuffield GNVQ science. The relevant pages are Nelson pages 4 to 11. For Nuffield its pages 54 to 59 Then go onto the internet and look at: www.hse.gov.uk. Select legislation for chemical industries and find out about each relevant act or piece of legislation. Also look at environmental legislation - disposal of hazardous waste.

  7. Questions: Read ‘managing hazards’ on page 57 of Nuffield. Identify: a) the hazards b) equipment used to protect people from hazards c) procedures designed to reduce risk of harm d) methods of monitoring to check that the safety precautions are effective.
