  1. CRCT Wednesday!!! February 10, 2010

  2. 1. Absolute Value and Integers Absolute value  - the distance from zero on a number line “| |”  - the symbol used for absolute value

  3. 1. Absolute Value and Integers What is | 18 | ?  The answer is 18 What is | -14 | ?  The answer is 14 What is | 10 – 15 | ?  The answer is 5

  4. 1. Absolute Value and Integers On a number line, as I move to the left the numbers get? smaller As I move to the right the numbers get? larger Where do the negative numbers fall? To the left of zero

  5. 1. Absolute Value and Integers How do you order fractions? find common denominators, then look at their numerators Order these from least to greatest: ½, ¾, 1/8, 5/8 How do you order decimals? look at their decimal place Order these from least to greatest: 1.5, 1.65, 1.605, 1.6

  6. 1. Absolute Value and Integers Rules for adding integers: 1. Same signs  add and keep the sign 2. Different signs  subtract and take the sign from the winning team -3 + -8 = -9 + 4 = Rules for subtracting integers: 1. Keep the 1st number, change the subtraction to addition, change the 2nd number to its’ opposite STAY  CHANGE  SWITCH 5 – 15 = -4 – 8 4 - -4 =

  7. 1. Absolute Value and Integers Rules for multiplying and dividing integers: 1. Multiply or divide normally 2. Count the number of negatives in the problem 3. Odd # of negatives  negative answer 4. Even # of negatives  positive answer (-3)(-4) = (-1)(3) =

  8. 1. Absolute Value and Integers Practice Problems to complete in your CRCT workbooks: 1. Page 1  #1 – 5 2. Page 3  #14 – 17 3. Pages 4 – 5  #1 – 10 4. Pages 8 – 9  #12 – 15 5. Pages 10 – 11  #1 – 10 Remember to use your MATH UNRAVEL strategies to help you!!!!!
