Sustainable Global Observations WMO • Through the further integration of surface & space components, Members support in the 15th period, GOS continued to provide unique and sustainable observational data and information on the state of the Earth, • Along with increasing amount of satellite data and services, further improvements achieved in the quality & availability of data produced by other components, notably marine and aircraft-based observations.

Marine Observations, JCOMM Implementation Goals Ships (SOT) • 3 component networks reached density targets of the initial ocean observing system but sustainability remains an issue • Implementation plan stalled at 62% level • Focus on climate and GFCS requirements Profiling floats (Argo) Drifters (DBCP)

Marine observations • WIGOS integration will be addressed through Pilot Project legacy recommendations, • Building partnerships through implementation of the PANGEA concept: • Developed countries bring expertise on ocean data use, • Developing countries assist with the implementation of in situ ocean observing systems (e.g. ship time, deployments), • Establish an International forum of users of satellite data telecommunication systems with IOC & FAO.

Evolution of the GOS WMO • RRR has expanded and it now covers 12 application areas; • Add new application areas that are important from the WIGOS & climate, e.g. Polar Meteorology, cryosphere, global carbon cycle & Space Weather, • OSEs/OSSEs address new impact studies - 5th Impact Workshop will be held in USA in 2012, • Develop the new Implementation Plan for the Evolution of global observing systems, taking into account Vision for GOS in 2025, WIGOS and GFCS developments, • A strategy for future hosting of WMO databases(user requirements vs observing systems capability).

Draft Resolution 3.1.1/1 (Cg‑XVI) WMO Members: • Ensure sustainable operation of the GOS, • Encourage optimization of GOS, • Implement advanced composite system, • Follow guidelines contained in EGOS-IP and report their progress and plans, • Support OSEs/OSSEs, • Provide historical data/metadata from GSN/GUAN, • Increase the use of automatic weather observing systems.

Draft Resolution 3.1.1/1 (Cg‑XVI) WMO RAs: To promote the coordinated implementation of the GOS in the Regions through sustainable functioning of RBSNs/RBCNs and to keep under continuous review related regional requirements. CBS: To develop the new Implementation Plan for the Evolution of global observing systems (EGOS-IP), taking into account the Vision for the GOS in 2025, WIGOS and GFCS developments, to guide Members in the implementation of their national observational programmes. EC: To provide guidance in the development of GOS. SG: To assist Members in the implementation of the GOS Programme.
