  2. Younger Years • Born on March 25, 1947 in England • Taught self to play piano at age of 4 • Won a scholarship to attend a music academy in London • Not a very good relationship with parents • Dropped out of school at age 17

  3. Early Music Career • Joined the band “Bluesology” to start career • Gained popularity at the start of the 70’s • Early hits include “Your Song”, “Crocodile Rock”, “Bennie and the Jets”, and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.”

  4. Gay Announcement • Originally married to Renate Blauel for 4 years • Announcement of being gay in 1976 to public • Started large controversy • Currently married to David Furnish

  5. Substance and Alcohol Abuse • Addicted to drugs and alcohol early in career • Went into rehabilitation in 1990 • After rehab, came out completely sober and no longer addicted • Became his “second chance”

  6. The Lion King • Teamed up with Tim Rice in 1991 to write soundtrack to movie • Movie became highest grossing Disney movie of all time • Three songs from movie nominated into Oscar Awards • Currently highest grossing Broadway show

  7. Achievements and Awards • Lion King’s “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” won Oscar • Opened up “Elton John AIDS Foundation” • “Crocodile Rock” first US number-one single • Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994

  8. Life Today • Continues to perform around the world • Most recent CD released in 2013 • Married with two children from help of surrogate • Currently dealing with health issues and has been hospitalized numerous times
