  2. Setting the Stage • 1914 Europe is divided (Triple Entente &Triple Alliance) • A-H declared war against Serbia • Countries took sides • One of the largest most destructive wars in history

The Great War Begins • August 1st 1914 German gov. declared war on Russia • Central Powers (location)- Germany and Austria- Hungary, Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire • Allies- GB, France, Russia, Japan, Italy(switched sides) • Mid- August 1914 battle lines drawn • Summer of 1914 millions of soldiers marched happily to war

  4. A bloody Stalemate • Deadlock in the Western Front (northern France) • Schlieffen Plan (Germany) two front war- defeat France quickly- turn to Russia • Germans hope for a quick defeat • Sept. 5 Allies attacked G in Paris • Over 600 taxis brought soldiers to Paris

Change of Plans • Quick victory was not possible in west • Western Front trench warfare (huge life loss) • Space between trenches= no man’s land • Conditions were dire in trenches • New technology did not end war faster, only killed more men • July 1916 Battle of Somme in Verdun (1/2 million men died on each side) (only gained 5 miles)

The Battle on the Eastern Front • Eastern Front- German/ Russian boarder • Russians& Serbs vs. Germans & A-H • Slaughter and stalemate were common • August 1914 German victory against R at Battle of Tannenberg • 1916 Russia was near collapse (food, ammunition, material shortages) • Russians had tons of men • Fighting spread to Africa and Asia
