INTRODUCTION This Meetup is dedicated to the concept of various portable ‘preps’. These come in many forms and there are various terms used in the ‘prepper’ community to describe them. The “bugout bag” is perhaps the most well known. This is the gear you would use if forced to evacuate your home, town or city. It has the gear that you and your family might need to survive and thrive in another place and en route to that place. We will examine various bugout bags and systems, as well as the smaller prep bags and gear that are used to get you home, or to survive an emergency situation.
GO-BAGS / EDC BAGS USES - Natural disaster or other emergency occurs while you are at work, on the road, or otherwise away from your home or car preparations. Go-bags and EDC (Every Day Carry) bags are usually rather small bags and packs. Sometimes these are small enough to keep on your person, or in a desk drawer at work. CONTENTS(These vary greatly depending on size and personal preference). Typical Items - Food, water, med kit, knife/multitool, flashlight, tarp, water purification, tools, space blanket, compass, etc.

GET-HOME BAGS CONTENTS(These vary greatly depending on size and personal preference). A “Get-Home” bag is typically a mid-size bag, sling or pack that is easily carried. These are commonly kept in the trunk of a car. Its purpose is to keep the gear you might need if you need to leave your car and make your way home on foot (thus the term “Get-Home” bag. Typical Items – 1-3 days food rations, water, med kit, knife/multitool, flashlight, tarp, water purification, fire making tools, space blanket, compass, etc. NOTE: I also keep a ‘trunk kit’. This consists of an old sweatshirt, jacket, boots, sleeping bag, a tarp, a cook pot, firemaking making materials, a hatchet and knife, and some dry foodstocks (ramen, oatmeal, cocoa, instant coffee, etc). I could camp in relative comfort for almost a week with the items in my trunk.
To bug out… or NOT to bug out… THAT is the question! BUGGING IN...Do you have a neighborhood defense plan?- How many neighbors?- Comms?- Patrol Plan? My plan is to BUG-IN if possible. My home is my castle and has the most preps to ensure and defend my continued survival. There are very few scenarios where I would EVER consider bugging out!
To bug out… or NOT to bug out… THAT is the question! If you are prepared, it is usually FAR better to stay hidden at home (a defensible position) than to head out into the unknown. My bugout plan is therefore HEAVILY based on the fact that things have gone SERIOUSLY WRONG. Remember… 3 DAYS TO ANIMAL – If the supply trucks stop rolling, the shelves of your average town/city will be empty within 3 days. At this point, most people begin to undergo the initial phases of hunger and panic. Animalistic behavior and/or mob rule can be expected at this point. If forced to leave, I would want to haul as many necessities as possible, including the means to acquire and scavenge more as needed. But that presents some problems…
Are you a BUGOUT or a TARGET? In a serious disaster scenario, a guy on foot, lugging an 80 pound pack full of supplies down the road… is a SLOW-MOVING TARGET. This means that you need to make the decision to stay or go either BEFORE the panic stage… or WELL AFTER things have “settled”. A prepper on the move MUST be: (A) Well camouflaged and moving off-road. (B) Moving only at night, and sleeping (well-hidden) in the daytime. (C) Moving faster than half-crazed, hungry mobs. (D) The biggest, baddest, meanest motherf***er in the valley. (E) All of the above.
MY TIERED APPROACH This is my bugout system. It is a multi-level tiered approach to life in transit. It has the gear AND the means to scavenge and/or improvise the tools and gear I might need.
TIER ONE - Bike and cart - maximum gear load affording several months worth of supplies.
PACK - Tent, Patrol Bag, Bivy Sack, Pad, Sil Tarp - 3 Weeks Emergency food rations - Water, canteen & Cup, water bladder & dry bags - AR15, 4 mags, 200rds 5.56 & G19, 3mags & 200rds 9mm, Machete & Knife - Hooligan Kit - Bolt Cutters, Pry Bar, Saw, Adj.wrench, Leatherman - Perimeter Alarms (4) and trip line spools - Paracord, 200Ft - Seatbelt strapping, 50ft.(6000Lb test) - Clothing - 2 Pr.Pants (zip-offs), 2 tees, 3Pr Socks, Polypro Base, Gore shell. - Toiletries - Microfiber Towel, & Toiletries - WINTER PACK - Sleeping Bag (0deg), Extra base and fleece mid layers - Med Kit TIER ONE - Bike and cart - maximum gear load, several months supply. BINS - 8 Weeks Emergency food rations, - Several gallons water storage - Ammunition - 300rds 9mm & 300rds 5.56 - Solar USB Charger, Extra Batteries - Alcohol stove & 2 liters fuel - Hand Crank Radio - Extra Clothing & Footwear - Extra cordage, tools, toiletries, etc
TIER TWO Advantages: - Maneuverable - Can haul heavy loads faster and easier than a pack. Bike breaks, or terrain becomes too difficult for biking - Use cart as a push cart. Can unload some gear to lighten if necessary.

TIER THREE Cart broken, or terrain no longer allows use of cart. Ditch the cart, and go with just the backpack. Disadvantages – A few weeks rations, and a bit heavy Advantages – Maneuverable and… BULLETPROOF!!
MY UP-ARMORED BUGOUT PACK Used Vest panel purchased cheap. Sheathed in matching pack-cloth, and sandwiched between pack and frame. Adds 3 Lbs. Pack becomes ballistic cover for prone or kneeling firing position.

“HOOLIGAN KIT”- A set of tools used to ‘obtain’ supplies on the run Can set camp, unload pack, hide all gear, and go scavenging.
