  1. Interactionswithin anEcosystem

  2. Predation A predator is an animal that actively hunts for food (the prey). Predators have a direct impact on prey populations.

  3. What do these animals have in common? They are predators! This means they actively hunt for food.

  4. Arctic Fox and the Snowshoe Hare The hare (prey) population would decrease as a result of there being more foxes (predators). Predict what would happen to the hare population if the number of foxes dramatically increased one spring

  5. Symbiotic Interactions A symbiotic interaction is one in which organisms of different species live together in a close relationship. sym = with biotic = life

  6. Parasitism What do you think of when you hear the word “parasite”? Parasitism is a symbiotic relationship between organisms of two different species in which one benefits and the other is harmed.

  7. Can you think of anotherexample of parasitism? Fleas are often found on cats. In this case, the flea is the parasite and the cat is the host.

  8. Mutualism Mutualism is a symbiotic relationship between organisms of two different species in which both benefit. The pilot fish live closely with sharks to gain protection from predators, while they clean the shark of parasites.

  9. Everyday Exampleof Mutualism Pollination of flowers by insects and birds is a classic example of mutualism.

  10. Commensalism This hermit crab uses the discarded shell of a gastropod for protection. Commensalism is a symbiotic relationship between organisms of two different species in which one benefits and the other neither benefits nor is harmed.

  11. More Examples of Commensalism cattle and egrets whales and barnacles

  12. Summary There are many interactions taking place within an ecosystem. Think about how these interactions affect the survival of one or both organisms. What interactions do YOU depend upon for survival?

  13. Sample Questions • Some bacteria that live in the large intestine of humans produce B-complex vitamins that are useful to humans. This relationship between the bacteria and humans is an example of what?

  14. Malaria is caused by a protozoan that destroys red blood cells. The relationship between humans and this protozoan is called what?

  15. Orchids grow at the tops of trees in the rainforest. The trees provide access to the nutrients and rain that the orchid receives from the environment. The orchids do not aid or damage the tree in any way. This is an example of what type of relationship?
