21st Century Learning Students belong to a sustained, dynamic learning community that supports them to explore and attain deep understanding and full mastery of core knowledge and concepts of 21st century content, habits of mind, personal discipline and character, and the social/collaboration skills required to successfully develop and apply their learning within diverse and complex 21st century challenges relevant to careers, civic participation, college, and lifelong learning. Taken from Summary Results: Discrepancies, Root Causes Strategies/Practices Vermont Department of Education: The Education Transformation Policy Commission

Goals • Understand how the Commissioner’s vision of transforming education is tied to our work. • Understand how communication in a mathematical classroom should be used to further the thinking and understanding of both students and teachers. • Identify how to implement today’s learning to your setting.

Norms Setting norms fosters the development of a culture of communication. What practices do we want to set in our work today to ensure a successful and engaging learning community? Norms will be revisited throughout the day as needed.
Considering 21st Century Learning Read p. 3 from Summary results Respond to the following prompt: How can effective communication foster the development of 21st century learning in your mathematical classrooms?
Communication in the classroom is the way in which we can express our understanding of and contribute to the learning of others.
“What is the shortest word in the English language that contains the letters: abcdef? Answer: feedback. Don't forget that feedback is one of the essential elements of good communication.”
Communication Communicate Clearly • Articulate thoughts and ideas effectively using oral, written and nonverbal communication skills in a variety of forms and contexts • Listen effectively to decipher meaning, including knowledge, values, attitudes and intentions • Use communication for a range of purposes (e.g. to inform, instruct, motivate and persuade) • Utilize multiple media and technologies, and know how to judge their effectiveness a priori as well as assess their impact • Communicate effectively in diverse environments (including multi-lingual) http://www.21stcenturyskills.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=261&Itemid=120
Communication Research & Expectations Description of Task: This is a time for you to learn more about a mode of communication in order to engage students and enhance learning. The three modes of communication are reading, writing, and non-written expression. Directions: • Find the station with the mode of communication of your choice. • Group Brainstorm • Review the materials provided at the station. • Utilize your time to research and summarize your findings on your own (Frayer diagrams are provided in your participant packet. One for individual work and group work) • Collaborate within your group to create a large Frayer diagram on chart paper to share with the whole group. Frayer Link

Application of New Learning Description of Task: You will have the choice of a few activities: Creation: Applying new learning to create an authentic activity. Evaluation: Looking at an existing lesson plan, identify and evaluate the effectiveness of the modes of communication. Comparison: Look at multiple examples of lessons and/or activities comparing different the different ways in which communication is utilized. Application Outcomes Before your time is over, you are to have identified the following: • Vermont Framework Standard or GE • Concept • Learning Goal • Activities utilizing 21st century communication • How this activity allows the teachers and other students to be able to evaluate their own understanding towards the learning goal.
