  8. VISA • Bureau of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs- apply for a resident visa with a visitor visa • National Immigration Agency, Kaohsiung City Service Station- 1. apply for an Alien Residence Certificate (ARC) 2. extend your visa

  9. Alien Resident Certificate • International students staying in Taiwan for more than 6 months will have to apply for an Alien Resident Certificate. • A. Student with a visitor visa will first need to apply for a resident visa from the Bureau of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kaohsiung Office. The visa will be issued within 15 days. • B. Student with a resident visa will need to apply for the Alien Resident Certificate at the National Immigration Agency Kaohsiung City Service Center within 15 days. (You can always pick up the application form at OIA)

  10. Extend your visa • International Exchange Students staying here for only one semester have no need to apply for an Alien Resident Certificate. With a visitor visa, you may stay here for 60 days and you can apply at National Immigration Agency Kaohsiung City Service Center for a maximum of2 extensions, each for sixty days. • The applicants are required to apply for extension within 10 days prior to the expiration of a visitor visa.

  11. Reminders for extending your visa • Students holding multiple entry visa may re-enter Taiwan within the valid period stated on the visa. Students holding single entry visa and if he or she leaves Taiwan, he or she will need to apply for visa from overseas in order to re-enter Taiwan again. • If your visa expires, you will be deported and have to apply for visa from overseas in order to re-enter Taiwan again.

  12. Reminders regarding Entry for Aliens (foreign nationals) in Taiwan • Foreign nationals are required to apply for Resident Certificate within fifteen days after they are issued a Resident Visa. They will be fined if they violate the regulation set by the National Immigration Agency in Taiwan. • If foreign nationals stay in Taiwan after Visitor Visa or Resident Certificate expires, they will be fined according to the regulation set by National Immigration Agency in Taiwan.

  14. General Codes of Conduct for Students of NSYSU • Students who violate regulations will be issued a written warning. • Students status at NSYSU will be cancelled • A letter of notification will be sent to the home institution of students who seriously and repeatedly violate NSYSU regulations.

  15. Important General Codes • Students are not allowed entry into the dormitories of the opposite gender, nor have overnight guests. If found, you will be evicted from dormitories. • Students are not allowed to swim where prohibited and also where no lifeguards are on duty. • Students should not undertake actions off-campus which will in turn bring dishonor to NSYSU.

  16. Registration Procedures • 1. Your Registration Form is inside your package. • 2. Pick up the dormitory and insurance payment notice, and submit the medical insurance certificate at the Office of International Affairs. ( 9/17 ~ 9/21 at the Library) • 3. Present your payment notice and pay fees at either Family Mart convenience store or post office. Please make sure to keep your receipt after paying the fee. • 4. Return the Registration Form to Registrar Division and pick up your Student ID Card. ( 9/17 ~ 9/21 at the Library)

  17. Fees • International exchange students from sister universities have tuition waiver. • Fees that exchange students need to pay include: • Student Union Group Insurance Fee: NT$ 275 • Computer facilities usage: NT$300 • Health Insurance Fee: If you stay in Taiwan for more than 4 months.

  20. Leaving Procedures 1. Obtain the Procedure Sheet for Leaving NSYSU at Office of International Affairs before your leaving time. 2. Return room key & sensor to the Dorm Office. 3. Return borrowed books and pay back the overdue fines (if any) at the Library. 4. Pay off the fines of violating the rules (if any) at the Vehicle Regulation Office. 5. Fill out the questionnaire at the Office of International Affairs. 6. Fill out the address of your home and Institute on Leaving Procedure Sheet, and return this sheet to Registrar Division.

  21. Attendance • If the student’s total absent days exceeds that of 1/3 the total number of days the class is in session, the university will notify the student’s home institution by formal letter. Absence without proper documentation is considered the same as truancy. One truant hour is the equivalent of two hours of missed classes.

  22. National Health Insurance • All foreigners residing in Taiwan for more than 4 months, and holding an Alien Resident Certificate, are requiredto join the National Health Insurance Program. Premium is to be paid monthly (NT$749 per month). Students who are eligible to join the NHI have to pay the premium in full upon registration.

  23. Chinese Class • If you already have some basic knowledge of Chinese, please go to Room 203, 2nd Floor, Liberal Arts Building at 9:30 on 20th of Feb. for your placement test. You will all start your Chinese course on 26th of Feb. at 12:10. • 如果你已經學過中文了, 請記得在2月20日早上9:30在文學院2樓的203教室參加中文考試。所有的學生將於2月26日中午12點10分開始上課。

  24. Chinese Class • Separate registration form for Chinese class. • Hand in the form on the first day of Chinese class. • To withdrawal from Chinese class, go to the Chinese Language Center to fill out the withdrawal form. • Deadline to sign up: March 5th • Deadline to drop: March 5th

  25. Important Dates • Please be well aware that it is your responsibility to memorize all the important dates regarding your course selection and confirmation. • If you’re not clear with the course selection procedures, don’t forget that your buddy is a very good helper to assist you.

  28. Accommodation • Hot Water Supply • The hot water used in the dormitories’ shower facilities is provided by boilers and is readily available everyday between 5 p.m. to midnight. For the students’ convenience, it is recommended to use the shower facilities during these hours.

Accommodation • Visitors of Opposite Gender • If a student, for some reason such as repairing a computer or carrying heavy objects, has a visitor of opposite gender, the visitor accompanied by the student needs to inform the residence manager or advisor and get an ID in exchange for a yellow vest to wear for identification. Visiting time is 10:00am to 8:00pm. The duration of stay may not last more than two hours. • Overnight visitors are prohibited. If found, students will be deported from dormitories.

  31. Application for Parking Permit • Students may obtain a scooter’s parking permit for parking space on campus. The cost of the permit is NT$300. An applicant needs to fill out an application form (at OIA) and attach a copy of scooter registration, driver’s license. student I.D and an emission testsheet of your scooter. Also the automobile liability insurance of your scooter needs to be prepared as the beneficial document for your permit.

  32. Traffic Regulations • It is required to wear helmets while riding a scooter for safety purpose. • It is against regulation to ride a scooter after drinking alcohol. • When parking scooters around the dormitory buildings or classroom area, please make sure scooters are parked WITHIN the white parking spaces. Scooters may be towed away by the Motor Vehicle Regulations Office.

  34. Pre-paid Cell Phone Card • You need: - a GSM 2 or 3-band phone, which you can bring from your own country or buy locally. - 2 kinds of Identification Certificates. It can be your passport, ARC card and Student ID. • The card can be purchased at any Telecom outlet or service center, or Convenience Stores.

  35. Open a Bank Account • You need: - ID no. in Taiwan (Kaohsiung City Service Station of the National Immigration Agency ) •  - 2 kinds of Identification Certificates. It can be your passport, ARC card and Student ID.

  37. Reminders • Tunnel and Rear Gate will be closed at night. (From 00:00~5:00am) • Please be very careful about any body contacts while getting along with other students. We strongly suggest students to know more about local cultures before coming to Taiwan.
