  3. What You Need to Know about the OSSLT • Grade 10 students will write the OSSLT this year • Literacy happens everywhere – not just in the English classroom • Literacy is a shared responsibility and we need your support

  4. What YOU need to know: • RF Hall will provide a variety of Literacy support programs this year • The following will help explain what resources are available to help you to prepare your son/daughter for the OSSLT

  5. WHAT IS EQAO?(Education Quality Accountability Office) • EQAO is an independent agency established by the government • EQAO creates and implements student assessment

  6. Provides feedback to the Minister of Education and Training, schools and the public based on standardized testing and makes recommendations for improvement. EQAO(Education Quality Accountability Office)

  7. WHAT IS THE OSSLT?(Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test) • Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) is a standardized literacy test • All grade 10 students in the province of Ontario write this test on Thursday, March, 27, 2014

  8. OSSLT(Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test) • The reading and writing skills tested on the OSSLT are based on all curricula in The Ontario Curriculum up to the end of Grade 9 Students must PASS this test as a GRADUATION requirement!

  9. OSSLT(Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test) • A student will receive a mark of PASS or FAIL • If a student is unsuccessful he/she may re-write the test the following year OR • He/she will be scheduled to take the Ontario Secondary Literacy Course (OSSLC) either during school as a credit course or at summer school or night school

  10. Prior to The Test… • Students will feel more confident and relaxed if they have been preparing by practicing – completing the Literacy activities and listening to feedback from teachers • Check out the EQAO web site: www.eqao.com

  11. How we will prepare your child: • All Grade Ten students will complete practice literacy activities in all of their classes

  12. How we will prepare your child: All Grade 10 students will receive an OSSLT Preparation Workbook with activities related to all of their grade 10 subjects.

  13. How we will prepare your child: • Teachers will provide students with formative assessment feedback on their completed activities

  14. How we will prepare your child: Students having difficulty with the Preparation Workbook will be offered extra help.

  15. How YOU can prepare your child: • Encourage your child to complete the practice activities in their RF Hall Literacy Workbook with their classes • Students falling behind can sign up for the extra literacy support program – call his/her guidance councilor • Practice activities with them at home

  16. Literacy Plan For Grade 9 Students • All Grade 9 students will write a SAMPLE TEST on Thursday, March 27, 2014 • Grade 9 students will also complete Literacy preparation activities in their English class

  17. What Does The OSSLT Look Like? • Thursday, March 27, 2014 • Two booklets – 75 minutes each • One scantron answer sheet • One 15 minute break • One student questionnaire • One goal: SUCCESS!

Writing Tasks: News Report (one page) Opinion Piece (two pages) 1 Short Writing task (6 lines) 4 multiple-choice writing questions Conventions (grammar and punctuation) Sentence and Paragraph structure Organization of ideas What Does the OSSLT Look Like?2 PARTS Reading Selections: • Informational (paragraph, news report) • Narrative (dialogue, real life narrative) • Graphical (chart, graph, map) • 20 multiple-choice reading questions • Open-response reading questions (6 lines each) • Explain with text support • Explain with text support and student ideas • Summarize
