  5. Educational Info. • I am a junior at Shepherd University. • I am majoring in education. • I have completed 9 hours of education courses.

  6. My Work Experience • I observed a creative writing/English teacher at Martinsburg High School. • I then observed and worked hands-on with 7th and 8th graders at North Middle.

  7. My Work Experience I have also been a P.A.S.S. volunteer for four years in three different elementary schools. • Providing • Academic and • Self-esteem • Support

  9. Teaching Facts… TITLE IX • passed in 1972 • didn’t allow discrimination based upon gender to withhold a person from participating in educational programs

  10. Teaching Facts… WVEA • (West Virginia Education Association) • Founded in1865 • state’s largest education employee organization

  11. Teaching Facts… Read to children! …and have them read as well • They will learn to write and spell faster than children who don’t read. • Students who read and are read to achieve higher grades in language and perform better on standardized tests.

  12. Teaching Facts… CHARTER SCHOOLS • An alternative form of schooling other than public and private • There are over 1,600 charter schools in the United States. • More than 350,000 students attend charter schools.

Teaching Facts… “NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND” • ‘West Virginia Achieves’ is the states ‘No Child Left Behind’ plan • state standards are set in reading and math • annual testing in grades 3-8 • results and state progress objectives must be broken out by poverty, race, ethnicity, disability, and limited English proficiency to ensure that no group is left behind.
