  6. Curriculum • The 1st grade curriculum consists of Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. Our curriculum follows the Florida Standards, providing your child with a well-rounded and complete education.

  7. Silent Reading • The students have 25 minutes to read silently and eat their snack. So please be sure to always have at least two on level reading books for them.

  8. Reading • Broward County has adopted a new reading series, as of last year, Journeys! • Online Resources • Think Central

  9. Math • Go Math! Series • Three Big Ideas: • Use Basic Facts • Use Tens and Ones • Geometry, Patterns, and Measurement

  10. Homework • Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday. • Your child’s blue binder is their homework folder. • Your child’s homework binder must come to school on a daily basis. • Please remember HW goes home on Mondays and is due on a daily basis.

  11. Homework Guidelines • Mondays: Two color spelling (consonants in blue and vowels in red) Read for 10 mins. Math assignment. • Tuesday: Write spelling words in ABC order and 3 times each. Read for 10 mins. Math assignment. • Wednesday: Write a sentence using each of your spelling words. Read for 10 mins. Math assignment. • Thursday: Review spelling words and sight words for test on Friday. Read for 10 mins. Finish all homework. • Friday: Quality family time.

  12. Daily Snack • Please send your child with a daily healthy snack. They don’t have lunch until 12:05 p.m. • Healthy snacks include all types of fruits, cereal or granola bars, cheese, yogurt, raisins, carrots, celery sticks etc…. • Please only send in individualized packaged snack. This is a snack that should be quick to eat because it is during our SSR time. • No Juices that require a straw. • Please note that we have several students with severe allergies.

  14. Classroom Rules • We will listen and follow directions. • We will be nice to others. • We will stay in our seats. • We will keep our hands, feets, and objects to ourselves. • We will raise our hands to talk. • We will stay on task.

Behavior System • We use Class Dojo • Mr. Potato Head • Cutie Pie • Lunch Bunch • One class rule broken: 1 negative dojo point verbal warning • Two class rules broken: 2 negative dojo points, lose a privilege • Three class rules broken: 3 negative dojo points dear parent letter • Three class rules broken: 4 negative, lose of a privilege, and parent contact

  16. Rewards • Verbal praise and recognition • Student of the week. • Student of the month. • Treasure Box tickets. • Fun Friday Activities • Lunch bunch

  17. Blue Communication Binder • Check every night for notes/letters and homework. • Initial every week in Dojo log • Return to school the next day Ask your child every night about what we did today.

  19. Communication • Parent involvement and constant communication between us is essential for your child’s success. • The best way to communicate with me is through email or via blue binder. • Our email address is mediaz@somersetacademy.com

Somerset Webpage • All important information regarding our classes is always on the Somerset Academy webpage. • Please go to somersetacademy.com, then click on staff directory, and finally click on Mrs. Maria Diaz. • Feel free to check this site every Monday. for updated information regarding our weekly curriculum and assignments.

Lunch and Birthdays • Lunch and breakfast can be prepaid by check. • Ice Cream and Chocolate Chip Cookies on Fridays $1.00 (these funds cannot be taken out of your child’s account). • Birthday celebrations will be celebrated towards the end of the day(1:00-1:35). Please let me know in advance if you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday.

  22. Planners • Planners are required by the school and are $6. • The planner must go home and return to school on a daily basis. • Please check your child’s planner every day for important information. You will find your child’s spelling words and daily homework in the planner, as well as on the website.

  23. Friday Folders • Friday folders are the Somerset folders. They go home on Fridays and come back on Mondays. Please empty the folder, unless there is something that needs to be signed and returned to us.

  24. Money Procedures • Please make sure that all money is in an envelope with your child’s name and what the money is for. • We highly encourage that all parents make online payments for field trips. • Checks are only excepted for lunch.

  25. Volunteer Hours • Parents need to volunteer 30 hours in the school year. • If you would like to purchase items from my wish list, please know that for every 4 dollars you spend you will receive 1 hour. • Please keep track of your own hours and staple all receipts to the volunteer form. • Once you have filled out the form, we will be happy to sign it. • Without the receipts, you will not receive volunteer hours. NO EXCEPTIONS!

  26. Attendance • Be here everyday! • Doors open at 7:45. • Students are marked tardy if they arrive after 8:05. • If a student is absent the parent/guardian has 48 hours to excuse it through a note, phone call, or e-mail. After 48 hours, you must have a doctor’s note.

  27. Dismissal • Carpool pickup is from 2:00 -2:15 p.m. • Students who are not picked up by 2:35 will be signed into the office and there will be a charge of $25 added to your volunteer hours. • Early Release Days – dismissal is at 12:00 p.m. • If you pick-up from the car lane: Please hang colored decal from your rearview mirror and make sure to include your child’s name using a dark permanent marker. • Early Pick-up is not allowed after 1:30 p.m. • If there is a change in the way that your child is getting home the best way to notify us is by sending a note or calling before 1:30 p.m.

  28. Conferences • Given by appointment • In person or by phone • Twice a year (fall and spring) or if there is a concern

  29. Fieldtrips • Three fieldtrips throughout the year • Only registered volunteers will be allowed to attend.
