  1. 8th Grade Math By: Jessica Rice, Jenna Allen, Meghan Dooley Sister Karen Class Room Management - EDUC3311 November 2nd, 2011

  2. Opening Preparations • As a teacher, we want to welcome the students as they enter the classroom. Beginning the class with a friendly interaction will set the mood of the classroom. • We will be holding a jar with numbers corresponding to the desks in the classroom. • Materials list: • Syllabus:expectations, grading rubric and rough outline of the course. • Inbox/Outbox:pass in homework and pick up materials. • Desk set up:2 by 2 rows • Room décor:inspirational quotes, math posters and rules of the classroom. • Board Set Up • Agenda:“Do Now,” homework, class work etc. • Month Calendar:Big events and due dates.

  3. Daily Agenda 1. Seating Arrangement:Pick a number from the jar and your seat is the corresponding desk. • Introduce Yourself: State your name and tell the class one way you used math over the summer. • Tabada: Take a break and do aerobics. 3. Fizz Buzz Game:Everybody must stand at their desk. One person begins the game by saying a number 1 through 99, then the next person must say the next number and so on. If your number is divisible by 5 instead you say “Fizz!” if the number is divisible by 7 you say “Buzz!” when the number is divisible by both 5 and 7 you say “Fizz! Buzz!”When someone makes a mistake they must sit down. 4. Syllabus, Rules, and Goals: Overview of what material will be taught this year, classroom management and goals to make this a successful year! 5. Board Activity: Cool math exercise! Three volunteers needed!

  4. 8th Grade Math Frameworks The Number System • Know that there are numbers that are not rational, and approximate them by rational numbers. Expressions and Equations • Work with radicals and integer exponents. • Understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations. • Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations Functions • Define, evaluate, and compare functions. • Use functions to model relationships between quantities. Geometry • Understand congruence and similarity using physical models, transparencies, or geometry software. • Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem. • Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving volume of cylinders, cones and spheres. Statistics and Probability • Investigate patterns of association in vicariate data.

  5. Board Activity Directions: • Choose any 3 digit number. (The number must not be a mirror image, e.g., 232, 446.) • Reverse the number and subtract the lower number from the higher one. • Now reverse this number and add it to the preceding product. Addressing Standard : Investigate patterns of association in vicariate data. • Interactive and Fun!! Gets students thinking more in depth about math without overwhelming them on the first day. • Two Fridays a month we will do a fun math activity, such as this one. We will also use these activities as bonuses on tests.

  6. Homework • Cover Math book • Begin Review Packet:We will go over it together tomorrow in class. These are exercises that you should have seen in previous math classes - we want to refresh your memory. Do not be overwhelmed if you cannot remember everything! This is why we are going over the packet tomorrow!
