  1. Ancient Greek and Latin Roots What do we mean by “Ancient Greek and Latin”? Greek refers to the language of Greece, and Latin is the language used by the ancient (very old) Romans. What is a root? A root is a piece of an ancient word that we find in the English language today.

  2. Ancient Greek and Latin Roots What is a derivative? A derivative is a word that has a Greek or Latin root inside of it. If you know what the root means, you may be able to figure out the meaning of the derivative. Example: “min” means small. “diminish” means to make smaller.

  4. Photograph – picture drawn by light. • Photometer – a device which measures light. • Phototropic – turning toward light. (Example: a sunflower ) • Photosynthesis – a process that plants use to convert (change) light energyto food energy.

  5. Practice • Write a sentence using the word photosynthesis correctly in a sentence. • In a sentence, describe how a photograph is a picture drawn by light.

  7. Photograph – picture drawn by light. • Graph– picturedinformation. • Graphite – black carbon used for drawing or writing. • Autograph – to write one’s own name • Hologram– a three-dimensional photograph of a whole object.

  8. Practice • Write a sentence using a derivative (word that has the root in it) correctly in a sentence. • The prefix “holo” means whole. How is a hologram different than a photograph. (Hint: think of dimensions – height, width, depth).
