  1. Australia as a Nation! By yours and truly Millie.

  2. Why did Australia become a nation? The premier of new South Wales, Sir Henry Parks, convinced the other premiers to discuss Federation and in 1890 the Australia federation convention, in colluding representatives from New Zealand, it was held in Melbourne . Next, the national Australia Convention was held in Sydney in 1891. each colony sent seven representatives. Work began on an Australia constitution. A draft was drawn up by a committee : Edmund Barton ( NSW ), Andrew Linglis Clarks ( Tasmania ), Samuel Griffith ( Queensland ), and Charles Kingston ( South Australia ). They looked at the constitutions of great Britain, the United States, Canada and Switzerland. Hard times across Australia drew people’s attention away from federation groups. They agreed that a national meeting would redraft the constitution and all Australians should have a chance to agree with the constitution by vote. Federation was becoming popular. People begin to realise that for matters like defence, controlling immigration and economy, a nation would be stronger than individual coloniens. Australia became an independents nation on the 1st of January 1910. the British Parliament passed legislation allowing the six Australia colonies to govern in own right as part of the commonwealth of Australia .

  3. How did Australia society change during this period of time? ( 1890-1915). • William Lawrence Bagg is most famous of his law on the diffraction of x-ray by crystals. • ( he made this discovery 1912 ). • Federation was a major event in Australia. ( 1901 ). • Australia’s first Prime Minister and judge was Edmund Barton. Edmund Barton was all so a speaker. • ( 1883 ) • On May 1911, the Australia shearers’ strike.

  4. Who were the people who came to Australia? Immigration has been vital feature of Australia’s history and identity. The nation today is composed not only of its Own indigenous people but a wide variety of ethnic and Cultural groups. There are other people who came to Australia like : .Japanese They were looking for jobs and a start to .Chinse new life. Lots of boats full of people were .Other people turned down.

  5. The suffragettes Throughout most of the nineteenth century woman usually had less social, legal and economic rights before the law than men. Woman workers were exploited economically and physically, and the plight of windows and deserted or abused wives was ignored. Women were generally considered to be physically, emotionally and intellectually inferior to men and the entrenched and patronising attitudes of the time made even the discussion of change unlikely. Despite the lead australia took in giving the vote to women, the actual representation of women in Parliaments was slow developing and still less than 20% nationally.(This situation began to change by the 1980s). The first woman elected to the Legislative Assembly (and the second to any Parliament in Australia) was Millicent Preston-Stanley.
