  2. The EIC Model in action What is the EIC Model? The Environment as an Integrating Context – using the local natural andcommunity surroundings as a context for learning.

  3. Why use the EIC Model? • Breaks down boundaries between subjects • Offers Hands on AND Minds on experiences • Learner centered • Uses local natural and community surroundings to connect instruction and learning

  4. So what is this “investigation”? • Year long group project • Based on grade level specific questions • Integrates all subjects • Broken into four 9-week mini projects • Culminates in a final work product to be presented/displayed for the Arabia Mountain community

  5. Group Information • All students will be divided into groups of five. • Teachers will determine the groups. • Groups will be announced by the first advisement period. • Beginning Wednesday, August 26, groups will meet during advisement periods (B weeks) to perform project related tasks.

  7. Riparian Zone • A riparian zone is the area next to the waterway that is immediately affected by the presence of water.

  8. Ninth Grade Question What are the effects of the ecosystem in the riparian zone (the area immediately beside the river or stream) on the adjacent aquatic ecosystem?

  9. Where do I begin? With your group, determine what you will investigate. Then: • Write a hypothesis. • Make a prediction. • Begin designing and planning your investigation.

  10. What isaHypothesis? “Atentativeexplanation for an observation, phenomenon, or scientific problem that can be tested by further investigation.”

  11. What is aPrediction? “Astatementmade about the future; the act of reasoning about the future; something foretold or predicted.”

  12. What am I responsible for at the end of the first nine weeks? • Grade level specific project • Group presentation – to be discussed during advisement • Projects posted on student’s personal websites
