Dialogue • 1. Conversation between two or more people. • Quotes famous from people / advertisement / slogans • “To be or not to be that is the question.” -Shakespeare • “Just do it!” -Nike • “Those who stay will be champions.” -University of Michigan
Rhetorical Question • 1. The author / speaker raises a question, but doesn't answer it directly as he/she sees the answer as obvious. • Rhetorical questions are used to provoke, emphasize or argue. • 2. A question that makes you think. • “What were you thinking?” This isn’t meant to be answered. • “Are you crazy?”
Analogy • 1. A similarity between like features of two things, on which a comparison may be based. ex. As I rode the ride, my hair blew back like a storm was rushing by me. ex. The waterslide was as refreshing as a cold glass of lemonade on a hot summer day.
Personal Experience • 1. Something you have experienced yourself. • As I walked through the gate, I remembered my first visit to Six Flags. I couldn’t help but smile as I buckled the little boy into the ride. It was his first time on a ride.
Examples • 1. An instance that is noted to prove or to illustrate a point. • The rivalry between Woodstock and Etowah as gotten carried away. A few years ago, Etowah students painted the Woodshed blue and yellow. It took parents all day to repaint it. Last Friday, Woodstock students spray painted graffiti on several buildings, a statue, and the lawn. If the students are identified, they will face criminal charges as they trespassed and defaced school property. Fun is fun, but this went too far.
Statistics • 1. Numerical facts or data. • White Water is closer than Lake Lanier Islands Water Park. However, Lake Lanier is less crowded, so you get to go on more rides. I was able to go on the twin tube ride six times in row without waiting. At White Water, I had to stand in line forever.
