OLIVET COLLEGE DEFENSEBY THE NUMBERS… • 2002 First year with current staff and system. • Finished 1st in MIAA in Total Defense (304 ypg.) • Finished 1st in MIAA in Opponent 1st Downs (157/17 pg) • Finished 2nd in MIAA in Scoring Defense (21 ppg) • Finished 2nd in MIAA in Rush Defense (102 ypg) • Finished 2nd in MIAA in Pass Defense Efficiency (118) • Improved Olivet’s total record from 1-9 in 2001 to 5-4 in 2002

GAMEDAY GOALS • WIN!!! • Hold opponent to 3 yds or less on 1st Down (65%). • Force 2 or more TURNOVERS. • No Sudden Change Touchdowns. • 3rd Down efficiency 60% or better. -66.6% in 2002 • Pressure the QB on at least 33% of passes. • SCORE-or set up at least 2 touchdowns. • Three and out efficiency of 33% or better. • Red Zone efficiency 60% or better. -64.7% in 2002 • NO SCORE LAST TWO MINUTES OF THE HALF! • NO SCORE LAST TWO MINUTES OF THE GAME!

  8. FRONT FOUR PHILOSOPHY • Teach techniques that linemen will use nearly every down. -5 Technique (Rush) -3 Technique (Tackle) -Shade (Nose) • Attack-Read -Get hands on offensive player -Short, quick power step -Block destruct and bust a move -Busy hands!!!

LINEBACKER PHILOSOPHY • Three Linebackers -Mike (Strong Side, off backer) -Will (Weak Side, off backer) -Sam (Strong or weak, off or on) • Sam provides flexibility -Allows our defense to appear to be a 5-2, a 4-3, or even a 3-4 by alignment. …This all creates confusion and allows many looks, without ridiculous time spent teaching.

HOW DO WE TEACH IT? • Make them better defensive backs. • -Stance, backpedal, techniques. • -If it will be used in a game, practice it. • Man principles-(Anyone can play zone.) • -Teach Corners/Safeties the same technique. • Small Parts • -Corners and Safeties together. • -Cut the field in half.

Why Spread Personnel? • We are trying to get the best matchups of our athletes vs. their athletes. • Typically, we will take out a slower athlete and replace him with a Defensive Back or Defensive backs. Our four man shell never changes!!!!! • Olivet’s spread personnel packages include Nickel, Dime, Florida, Florida Under and Georgia.
