Under Genghis Khan in 1206, these fierce and disciplined nomadic clans united to form the largest land empire in history. Despite fragmentation in the 1300s and eventual decline, Mongolia's independence in 1911 paved the way for a unique cultural identity. Today, Mongolia stands as a democracy with a predominantly nomadic lifestyle, reliant on livestock and natural resources like coal and oil, while grappling with the transition to a free-market economy.
