  5. I-Conditions in Texas under Spanish Rule 1-The Spanish plan to populate Texas with people loyal to Spain by building missions and converting Indians has failed. 2-The Spanish are worried that Texas will be overrun with settlers from the U.S. who are loyal to the U.S. and not Spain.

  6. 3-The Spanish are having to fight Indians, Tejanos (Spanish people that were born in Texas) and the U.S. settlers who are coming onto their land.

  7. II-Moses Austin has a Plan! 1-Moses Austin has a plan to bring people to Texas to settle on the land and become loyal Spanish citizens.

  8. 2-Spain thinks this is a great idea, but Moses Austin dies before he can bring settlers into Texas, he dies. 3-At about the same time, in 1821, Mexico wins its war of Independence from Spain. 4-Spain is sent back to Europe and is gone from North America. 5-Mexico the country is born and in charge of Texas

  9. III-Stephen F. Austin must now finish his father’s dream of bringing settlers to Texas.

  10. 1-He must convince Mexico to allow the settlers to come to Texas. 2-Mexico has their hands full with other matters. They are poor after fighting off Spain. 3-While waiting for Mexico to say yes, Austin finds the land he wants on the Brazos River.

  11. 4-Austin picked 11 million acres on the Gulf Coast region of Texas. 5-The colony would have a mild climate, fertile soil, plenty of water and timber, wild game and it was near the coast for supplies to arrive by ship.

  12. 6-Mexico passes the Imperial Colonization Law which allows Austin to bring settlers into Texas. 7-Austin is told he may form his own government for the colony, act as judge and form a militia (a small army) to protect it from Indian attack.

  13. IV- Austin advertises for settlers to come to Texas.

  14. 1-Austin’s offer was very attractive to people from the U.S. 2-In the U.S. people had to pay $1.25 per acre and buy a minimum of 80 acres with cash up front. 3-Austin was selling land for 12 .5 cents an acre and they could pay it off over time or with goods.

  15. 4-Heads of households would receive 640 acres of land. 5-A married man could get another 320 acres, plus 160 acres for each child. 6-Slaveholders could claim 80 acres per slave. Settlers who provided valuable services or who brought items such as cotton gins might receive extra land.

  16. 7-In order to get this great deal settlers had to meet 3 requirements: A- They had to be hardworking, law-abiding citizens. B-Had become Catholics C- Become Mexican citizens.

  17. V-Many people applied to Austin so they could come to Texas.

  18. 1-Austin’s first colony was made up of a group called the Old 300. These were the first settlers in his colony. 2-Most were from the southern U.S. and were farmers who brought their slaves. 3-Most were well-educated and law-abiding.

  19. 4-After Austin, many more EMPPRESARIOS (people who brought settlers to Texas in exchange for land or money) set up colonies in Texas. 5-Texas became full of U.S. settlers looking for good, cheap land and better opportunities.
