  1. Racism, Sexism, & Stereotyping An Introduction and Exploration

  2. What is racism?

  3. What is racism? • Noun The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior

  4. How do you think this man would be received if he traveled to central Pennsylvania?

  5. What about this woman, how would she be treated?

  6. On the issue of race • IT DOESN’T EXIST!!! • All human DNA has the same basic structure. • Variations are INDIVIDUAL. • (List Examples)

  7. On the issue of race • http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/1998-10/WUiS-GSRD-071098.php • Dr. Alan R. Templeton, Washington University "Race is a real cultural, political and economic concept in society, but it is not a biological concept, and that unfortunately is what many people wrongfully consider to be the essence of race in humans -- genetic differences.”

  8. On the issue of race • Often times when people think of “races” they are thinking of culture or religion or society • These things are important! And, there are MANY varieties of them.

  9. On calling someone racist • To call someone racist is to accuse them of believing that others who are different from themselves are less worthy of being considered a valuable human being. • If this is not true of someone, it is one of the worst things you could possible say about them.

  10. What is sexism? • NOUN • Prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex.

  11. On sexism • Found in: • ADVERTISING • FILMS/MEDIA • WORKPLACES • SCHOOLS

  12. Think about how much advertising features “girls, girls, girls!” These products are being marketed using sexism. Consider: Axe products designer clothing/shoes/ bags/perfume Etc.

  13. What is a stereotype? • NOUN • A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing: the stereotype of the woman as the carersexual and racial stereotypes

  15. Build a Better World • Stop racism, sexism, and stereotyping in your own life. • Don’t encourage these things when others engage in laughing or promoting stories that support racism, sexism, or sterotyping. • Understand that a lot of comedy shows that mock these concepts do so to raise awareness of the issues and to show the idiocy of them.

  16. Build a Better Worl • TREASURE and CELEBRATE the uniqueness of yourself and those around you! • DON’T BE AFRAID of what you don’t understand, EXPLORE it! • Live in the light of equality and kindness. Treat ALL people WELL ALL of the TIME. You don’t know everyone’s story, only your own.
