Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation Division of Water Alaska Monitoring and Assessment Program (AKMAP) AKMAP Current Status and Long Term Coastal Assessment Activities Ongoing Project Activities Through 2015 (Current 10 year plan) Based on 2005 Water Quality Monitoring & Assessment Strategy Douglas Dasher & Terri Lomax DEC Fairbanks, AK January 23, 2008
ADEC Division of Water • Within Alaska’s Arctic and Sub-Arctic: • Assess on a geographical {spatial proportional} scale the current environmental status (biological, chemical and physical) and long term trends of Alaska’s waters. • Seek to establish understanding of relationships between selected indicators and anthropogenic stressors. • Provide support for the scientific basis for State Water Quality Standards. • Resources • EPA Clean Water Act, MMS Coastal Impact Assistance Program, and partnerships (CIRCAC, NOAA, UAF, UAA)
Summary of major components of ongoing research & monitoring activities Activity goals • Determination of extent of coastal waters that meet Alaska’s Water Quality Standards • Assessment of current conditions and anthropogenic stressors • Biodiversity (baseline for bio- index development) Major elements (Modified Sediment Quality Triad) • Water column: Physical and chemical. • Sediments: Physical, chemical and biological. • Demersal Fish Trawls Desired outcomes • Status and trends reports (gray and peer-reviewed literature). • Resource management recommendations. • Development and modifications to State Water Quality Standards.
General Status of Projects General Schedule and Milestones • Chukchi Sea (Pt Hope to Barrow) AKMAP nearshore survey planned 2009 and 2010. • 2010 NCCA still in planning for Beaufort or Bering. • 2011 AKMAP Western Aleutian (re-assessment) • AMI Beaufort Sea Historical Data Assessment 2008 – 2010. Significant Accomplishments • Initial 2002 Southcentral AKMAP completed with report 2005. • Initial 2004 Southeast AKMAP database available and report in preparation for next NCCR. • 2006 & 2007 Aleutian AKMAP Field work completed, numerous new species identified, first NOAA Mussel Watch to span Aleutians, and region wide contaminant assessments. Reports in 2010.
State Wide Overview of AKMAP Note: Timeline Information is not accurate.
Planned or possible future activities • Beaufort Sea estuary assessment for current status. • Bering Sea current status assessment. • Reassessments of: • Southcentral Alaska • CIRCAC preliminary 2008 in Cook Inlet. • Focus PWS (2012). • Southeast Alaska 2013. • Aleutian Islands • Western 2011 • Eastern 2014.
Challenges Challenges • Funding • Multiple sources, sharing, partnerships. • Partnerships • Looking for shared goals and overlaps. • DEC/UA MOA & AKMAP DEC/UAF SFOS/IMS joint effort. • Data comparability • QA/QC, SOP’s. International efforts. • Database • Need to harmonize • STORET, AOOS, GINA, NOAA, MMS, etc.
Opportunities • CIAP Partnerships for: • Beaufort and Chukchi Sea’s estuaries assessment. • Collaboration on Climate Change • Ocean acidification • Biodiversity • EPA Vessel Bold • Potential vessel support between 2010 and 2015.
