Oysters in the Chesapeake BayOysters have played a large role in keeping the Chesapeake Bay’s water clean.Oysters filter harmful sediments and nutrients from the water.The oyster reef provides home to many different species of aquatic life in the Chesapeake Bay.The Chesapeake Bay used to have a plentiful amount of oysters. Today, the population of oysters has declined significantly.

  4. Oyster Events of the Past 1607- Colonists and John Smith at Jamestown feed on oysters as “hardship food”

  5. Oyster Events of the Past 1785 – Compact of 1785 signed between Maryland and Virginia to end violence over oyster harvesting

  6. Oyster Events of the Past 1865 – Oyster Dredge legalized after Civil War. Dredging flattens oyster reefs to beds at the bottom of the bay. Oysters dying because of sediment suffocation.

  7. Oyster Events of the Past 1882- Oyster Commission recommends conservation measures and oyster farming.

  8. Oyster Events of the Past 1914- World War I begins, oyster harvest low due to disrupted trade and harsh weather conditions

  9. Oyster Events of the Past 1933 – Depression and Hurricane of 1933 devastates Chesapeake Bay by dumping in gallons of freshwater.

  10. Oyster Events of the Past 1941 – Beginning of World War II. Watermen quit oystering to engage in the military.

  11. Oyster Events of the Past 1950 – Watermen return to the water. Mini-boom in oyster industry.

  12. Oyster Events of the Past 1960s – The Potomac Fisheries Bill is signed by JFK and stops the dredging in the Chesapeake Bay.

  13. Oyster Events of the Past 1972 – Hurricane Agnes brings a massive flood of fresh water and sediment into the Bay.

  14. Oyster Events of the Past 1980s – Two oyster diseases, MSX and Dermo, enter the bay killing the oysters.

  15. Oyster Events of the Past 1990s – The world is experimenting with raising oysters in hatcheries to meet the growing demand for them.
