How much money is there in prostitution? • The women we are in contact with report that they earn from NOK 5.000,- up to NOK 150.000,- per month • Statistics Norway (SSB) have estimated that the value of the demand for sexual services in Norway in 2008, was NOK 390 mill • The same year Fafo estimated that 3.300 persons were selling sex in Norway • This means that each person in average earned little less than NOK 120.000,- per year • The formula: the number of sex workers per day times the average number of sales per day times the average cost per service

  5. And how much money is there in human trafficking? • Trying to figure this out means that we at least have to know something about the scope of human trafficking to Norway. Nigeria (121) Lithuania (14) Romania (25) China (13) Somalia (15) Eritrea (13)

  6. The “answer”? • Using the same formula as Statistics Norway the guesstimate will be as follows: • In 2008 180 persons were identified as possible victims of trafficking for the purpose of prostitution • That year each person in prostitution earn on average NOK 120.000,- per year • 180 times NOK 120.000,- = NOK 21.600.000,- from prostitution in 2008 • From other forms of exploitation NOK ???

The flaws in this calculation • In the prostitution market the work load varies a lot and the earnings varies accordingly • Knowing that men and women trafficked to Norway for prostitution usually work long hours every day for the duration of their stay, they will most likely earn more than the average earnings per year, • and knowing that the number of people identified probably is in the low end of the actual number of victims, • the money in human trafficking is probably significantly higher than the number from this calculation • And on top of that you have the earnings from other forms of exploitation, especially forced labour.

  8. Conclusion! • We have little knowledge on human trafficking as an economic phenomenon • One major reason for this is the grave difficulty in gathering reliable and representative data • Hence, trying to estimate the economic benefits of trafficking is close to impossible • Thus, we are left with guesstimates that, in lack of better alternatives, quickly develops into the truth! • But, this sad fact cannot stop us from trying. On the contrary, it is now of outmost importance that we shift our focus from morality to the economic aspects of prostitution and human trafficking, to enable ourselves to better understand the mechanisms in these two phenomena.
