  2. It’s in Your Settings • The lesson for today is: • Christ is Relevant for Today • Our Key text is John 10.7-18. • This is one of Jesus’ most commented upon parables. Lots of books and lots of sermons from this passage. • I have a small problem. . .

  3. It’s in Your Settings • How do we answer when people say • I believe what you say but that was a long time ago. • How do we make Jesus relevant? • Jesus Himself was a master at relevance. • Why did He use the analogy of a shepherd?

  4. It’s in Your Settings • Now here’s my problem with Jn 10: • How many of you are shepherds or know a shepherd? • WV does have an active ruminant population, but they aren’t too big. • And there aren’t any sheep pens made of stone. So, how do we relate? What are the key elements of the story?

  5. It’s in Your Settings • The elements: • Sheep. Why sheep? • A gate to protect sheep and keep robbers out. • Good shepherd vs the help. • Obedience • The Resurrection. (my bibliography)

  6. It’s in Your Settings • So, with these elements, what’s the modern version? • Not rhetorical

  7. It’s in Your Settings • How about youtube or a computer firewall? • Youtube has security settings to keep you from bad stuff. The switch has two settings • Strict • Unfiltered • Set it to unfiltered and bad stuff gets in. • Not just images but viruses

  8. It’s in Your Settings • Jesus said • I am the firewall. Those who hack in are robbers and thieves. They are the finance minister from Ghana. • I am the strict setting. The babysitter changes the setting because she wants access and doesn’t worry about the kids.

  9. It’s in Your Settings • So, what else could we use here? • Maybe military service? • What else works and makes the point? • What is the point?

  10. It’s in Your Settings • Karl Compton • Physicist who helped develop the atomic bomb. • He said a technically evolved society needs an equivalent moral evolution. • People want true spirituality. They need us to show it. • Homework: 3, 5, 6. 2nd commit
