  1. How could you determine The affectiveness of cleaning products that you buy at the store? • Antibiotics, antisectc- Kill bacteria

  2. Antibiotics • Are substances that kill bacteria within your body • Inhibit bacteria from doing processes they need to do • Bacteria reproduce very quickly thus some bacteria may not be affected by an antibiotic which can be dangerous (If DNA mutates) • You should always finish a prescription

  3. Antiseptics/Disinfectants kill bacteria as well… • Antiseptics are substances that are applied to living tissue/skin to kill bacteria to reduce the possibility of infection. • disinfectants, destroy microorganisms found on non-living objects.(bleach etc..) Some antiseptics are true capable of destroying microbes while others are bacteriostatic and only prevent or inhibit.

  4. Which do you believe are more affective at killing bacteria? Antiseptics/Antibiotics/Disinfectants? • Design your own experiment to test this.. You will bring in 3 substances (Antiseptics and Disinfectants) , I’ll provide antibiotics • THIS IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO PASS THE QSR!!! YOUR TASK!!

  5. How would you discover if an antibiotic/antiseptic was affective? • If you took a plate of bacteria and exposed it to an antibiotic what would occur?

  6. How could you measure this? • % Coverage? • Zone of Inhibition?

  7. How do antibiotics, antiseptics and disenfectants effect bacteria growth? • Material Options • Bacteria- Several Types (I’ll pick 2) • Loop Antiseptics(BYOA) • Bunsen burner Disinfectants(BYOD) • Ethanol Antibiotics (make a choice) • 2 Petri dishes w/agar Filter Paper Circles • Distilled water Tweezers • Beakers/watch glass

  8. What do you need to make sure of when you set up your experiment? • Variables? One • What needs to be controlled? • Clarity of Steps? • How will you take data? (Zone of inhibition/% Coverage) • Sterile Technique
