  3. Language Services Scope • Delegates • Medical personnel • Families • Media • Guests • Members of the public

  4. Language Services Incorporating... • Delegation Assistant Liaisons (DALs) • Language Venue Managers • General Language Volunteers • Delegation Assistants • Simultaneous Interpretation • Translation

  5. Role of DAL • Volunteer • Assist with any language issues • Assistant for HoD, will accompany them to daily HoD meetings • Information point for delegation • Highly trained GOC liaison • Not an extra coach, personal shopper etc

  6. Role of Language Venue Managers • Manage Language Services at venues • Located at all venues • Manage Language Volunteers at venues

  7. Language Officers • At all venues, especially sports • Main focus on delegates but also available for families, guests and media • Take direction from Language Venue Manager

  8. Delegation Assistants • If possible, bilingual • Assigned to teams • Accompany team for the day • Well trained even if they don’t speak the language of the delegation

  9. Simultaneous Interpretation • Available at high level meetings in 6 languages – Arabic, English, French, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and Russian • Will be available at HoD meetings in Dublin Castle in 2003

  10. Translation • All important documents translated into Arabic, English, French, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and Russian • All communication from delegations to GOC should be in English

  11. In 2003…. • We will do all we can to secure language volunteers for all 54 official languages for the delegations participating... • BUT Ireland is a small country and there are no guarantees so the more members of the delegation that speak English, the easier it will be for everyone!

  12. Language Services • We are delighted to be welcoming so many delegations with different cultures and languages to Ireland in 2003 and aim to make them all feel as welcome as humanly possible • As we say in Ireland... Céad Míle Fáilte!
