1NT & Replies :- Very bad hands with 5 card suit 0-10 & Balanced No Bid 2, 2, 2 Revision of all replies to date 11-12 & Balanced 2NT invite Very strong hands with 5 card suit 14/15+ 3NT directly 13+ & Balanced 3, 3, 3 3 1NT - 2 Stayman 2 = 4 Hearts (maybe both) 2 = 4 Spades 2 = Neither Stayman with Weak hands need 54 In Majors (weak takeout) Stayman with Strong hands need 11+ and one four card major Transfers to majors 2 asks partner to bid 2 2 asks partner to bid 2 Responder could have :- 1.Weak take-out in either Major 4.Six card Major and invitational or game going hand 2. Balanced 11/12 points and five card major 5. Two suited hand including one five Card Major or more 3. Balanced 13/15 points and five card major
With Stayman and transfers you lose ? Ability to make weak take-outs at the 2 level of 2 (always taken as read) and now 2 Here we would normally reply 2 as a weakness take-out but we cannot as 2 is now a transfer to Hearts
So with transfers we can show our Minor suits as follows :- 2says partner please bid 3 and await further action if any 2NT says partner please bid 3 and await further action if any N S 1NT ? So here bid 2 Intending to pass the mandatory 3 request So here bid 2NT Intending to pass the mandatory 3 request
2says partner please bid 3 and await further action if any 2NT says partner please bid 3 and await further action if any N S 1NT ? So here bid 2NT Intending to pass the mandatory 3 request or maybe bid on ?????
You can also transfer with good 54 hands as follows :- 2says partner please bid 3 and await further action if any 2NT says partner please bid 3 and await further action if any N S 1NT ? So here bid 2NT Intending to bid 3 over the mandatory 3 So here bid 2NT Intending to bid 4 over the mandatory 3
DISOBEYING PARTNER – breaking transfers 2says partner please bid 3 and await further action if any 2NT says partner please bid 3 and await further action if any If you have been told to transfer BUT you have a feature such as the Ace or King in partner’s suit you may bid the suit in between and not “complete the transfer” 1NT 2NT (trans to Diamonds) 3 (I have feature) 3NT (that’s good I can now go for it !!)
DISOBEYING PARTNER – breaking transfers 2says partner please bid 3 and await further action if any 2NT says partner please bid 3 and await further action if any If you have been told to transfer BUT you have a feature such as the Ace or King in partner’s suit you may bid the suit in between and not “complete the transfer” However 1NT 2NT (trans to Diamonds) 3 (No feature) NO BID (you’re a lot of good!!)
DISOBEYING PARTNER – breaking transfers 2says partner please bid 3 and await further action if any 2NT says partner please bid 3 and await further action if any If you have been told to transfer BUT you have a feature such as the Ace or King in partner’s suit you may bid the suit in between and not “complete the transfer” However 1NT 2NT (trans to Diamonds) 3 (I have a feature) 3 (get lost I was weak from the outset !!)
We have now lost the ability to bid 2NT in natural sense as that is transfer to Diamonds so what to do ? We still need to use 2 as transfer to Hearts We still need to use 2 as transfer to Spades We still need to use 2NT as transfer to Diamonds Therefore the only bid we can dabble with is the 2 Stayman bid So we now use NON PROMISORY Stayman ie every time we bid Stayman we may or may not have a four card Major More often that not we will in fact still have 4 spades or 4 Hearts
