Statistics • 1 cardiac arrest every 12 minutes. • More than 6,500 people in Ontario die of a sudden cardiac arrest. • Toronto Paramedics respond to over 2,000 sudden cardiac arrests each year. • Without rapid and appropriate treatment, most cardiac arrests result in death. Those who survive will have permanent brain damage.

  3. We can do Better! • The odds of surviving a cardiac arrest is roughly 5% in Toronto and with each passing minute the probability of survival declines by 7 – 10%. • Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), combined with CPR and activating emergency medical services increase the chance of survival by up to 75%.

  4. Toronto EMS, Safe City Program • how to recognize an emergency • how to activate emergency medical services • how to perform hands only CPR • learn about Automated External Defibrillators (AED) • demonstrate how easy it is to use AED

  5. Proposal for Life-Saving Skills • 60 mannequins (to be stored at school for future) • 2 kits with teaching mannequins and DVDs • 2 hours in the gym • Kids get a wallet sized Introduction to CPR card • Teachers attend at no cost • $20/student in year one (instruction & mannequins) ~$1140 in 2013/2014 • $10/student in future years (instruction only) • Free if staff/parent volunteer instructs in future

  6. Who’s doing it? • 200 grade 6 students in South Western Ontario • 400 grade 6 students in New Brunswick • 500 grade 6 students in Vancouver • 800 grade 6 students in Manitoba

  7. Kids Saving Lives in 2013 • Feb 1, 2013 – young teen saves 82 year old stranger with CPR • Mar 18, 2013 – 9 and 10 year olds save neighbour’s baby with CPR • Mar 23, 2013 – 12 year old saves mother with CPR • June 8, 2013 – 11 year old saves brother with CPR
