  2. Worldwar 1 The First World War began when Britain and Germany went to war in August 1914, and Prime Minister Andrew Fisher's government pledged full support for Britain. The outbreak of war was greeted in Australia, as in many other places, with great enthusiasm.

World war 1 Australia's early involvement in the Great War included the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force taking possession of German New Guinea and the neighboring islands of the Bismarck Archipelago in October 1914. In November 1914 the RoyalAustralian Navy made a significant contribution when HMAS Sydneydestroyed the German raider SMS Emden.

  4. WorldWar1 Throughout 1916 and 1917 losses on the Western Front were heavy and gains were small. In 1918 the Australians reached the peak of their fighting performance in the battle of Hamel on 4 July. From 8 August they then took part in a series of decisive advances until Germany surrendered on 11 November.

  5. The landing of Gallipoli The boat I was in landed on the point. There were three boats to the left of us containing the 9th Battalion men, most of were killed or wounded in the boat on the extreme left. If the l0th Battalion and one of the 11th were on the right of my boat. Attacking and reaching the top of the point and he came up from the right side of the hill. The whole of the boats landed. My company was on the extreme left of the attack but the 9th Battalion boats landed to the left of us.
