SAMPLE JOB SPECIFICATION • Class Code 0501 • PRETRIAL SERVICES OFFICER I • NATURE OF WORK: • Under close supervision is responsible for interviewing defendants booked into the County Jail and conducting social history verifications. May be responsible for the monitoring of defendant telephonic check-in requirements and providing court testimony as needed. • EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: • Conducts interviews of criminal defendants at county jail. • Verifies social history information with defendants to be released to the Supervised Release Unit of Pretrial Services • Agency. • Reviews information gathered and compares with established procedures to make release determination or recommendations. • Insures that standard conditions of release are conveyed to and completely understood by defendants. • Monitors the defendant’s compliance or non-compliance with release conditions. • May prepare statistical reports or participate in special projects and assignments. 

SAMPLE JOB SPECIFICATION Class Code 0501 PRETRIAL SERVICES OFFICER I Continued QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor’s Degree from an academically credited college or university, preferably with a major in the Behavioral Sciences. Or any equivalent combination of training and work experience which indicates possession of the following knowledge, abilities, and skills. KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS: Some knowledge of the criminal justice system and pre-trial release function. Some knowledge of release criteria and their application. Some knowledge of interviewing practices and techniques. Some knowledge of basic mathematics and recordkeeping practices. Some knowledge of modern office practices and procedures. Ability to make limited pretrial release decisions in accordance with established guidelines and procedures. Ability to be tactful and adept in dealing with a wide variety of people. Ability to elicit needed information through interviews and verification processes. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Ability to prepare, process, and maintain a variety of forms, records, files, and lists. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.

SAMPLE JOB SPECIFICATION Class Code 0501 PRETRIAL SERVICES OFFICER I Continued NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicant must possess and maintain a valid Arizona drivers license and provide acceptable driving history at no cost to the county. Applicant must successfully complete a background investigation (felony convictions will be disqualifying and misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on the number, severity, and recency) and may also be required to successfully complete psychological, polygraph or other examinations or tests prior to appointment. Incumbents will be required to complete the training required by COJET (Committee on Judicial Education and Training).
