  2. Mont Saint-Michel is an island in the lower region of Normandy

  3. There is a legend, that the Archangel Michael appeared in 708 to St. Aubert, the bishop of Avranches,and told him to build a church on the island. Aubertignored this so Michael burned a hole in the bishop's skull with his finger.

  4. There are many underground crypts and chapels on the island

  5. Occasional flooding has created salt marshes that are used by grazing sheep. The well flavored meat that results from the diet of the sheep in the salt meadow makes agneau de pré-salé, (salt meadow lamb), a local specialty that may be found on the menus of restaurants that depend on income from the many visitors to the island.
