  3. About The School: • Delhi Public School, NOIDA is located in Sector-30, NOIDA. • It has approximately four thousand students and is spread over 16 acres. It is managed by the Delhi Public School Society. • It has evolved into one of the premier educational institutions in the country. • The school has a main building, a nursery wing, an open air auditorium, a multi-purpose hall, a canteen and two hostels. • The energy consumption in the school campus is mainly in the form of electricity; diesel for power generators and LPG as a cooking fuel in the hostels and the canteen.

  4. The Environment Committee • The Environment Committee or the EnCom is the MOST active committee in the whole school and is involved in various events around the year. • The EnCom has organized over 15 events in this academic year including a Tree Plantation Drive, an Anti Firecrackers Campaign and an Anti Polythene Bag campaign. • The EnCom members are a group of dedicated individuals who work selflessly to ensure a better future. They are handpicked students from various classes who take part in various environment related activities throughout the year. • It has four official representatives (2 Secretaries and 2 Joint Secretaries).

Objectives • To reduce the energy consumption of DPSN by approximately 30-40%. • To spread awareness about energy efficiency among Students, TeachersParents and the Community. • To effectively reduce energy consumption and garner energy savings and to extend equipment lifetime through effective implementation of this energy management program. • To provide a replicable model of effective energy management for other schools.

Our Approach • Survey: A detailed explanation of how we conducted the data collection process. • This data was then typed out and a soft copy was sent to the representatives of ICF International, who then compiled this data and incorporated it into their report. The main steps were: • Identification of the areas of intervention for energy conservation by benchmarking consumption against standards. This was done by ICF. • Implementation of the energy saving program and regularly tracking the energy consumption to verify the consumption. This is being done by the school management and the EnCom. • Publication of the results to provide a replicable model of Energy Efficiency for other schools . We will seek help and expertise of the BEE and ICF to implement this step.

  8. This is the main graph which shows the energy consumption by the school (In terms of INR) in one year (Aug ‘08 to Jul ‘09). Our aim is to bring down this graph by at least 30-40% in the coming year.

  9. These Diesel Generators are the main producers of electricity in our school. They consume huge amounts diesel every year. Under the plan, they will be serviced to increase efficiency.

  10. Our Current Action Plan • As suggested by the representatives of ICF International, we are currently focusing on the first phase, which includes ‘Low Cost’ and ‘No Cost’ solutions, which shall reduce our electricity consumption considerably without very large investments. • The first phase involves installing sub meters in various parts of the school and spreading awareness. The installation of the sub meters will allow us to measure the energy consumption of specific areas. • The current action plan can be broadly divided into two parts, the ‘Extremely Low Cost’ measures and the ‘Low Cost’ measures.

Extremely Low Cost Measures • The measures under this category are: • Periodic communication (through letters, SMSes, notes or eMails) to employees, teachers and students about the financial and environmental benefits of the energy conservation measures. • Awareness amongthe students and support staff about switching off lights, fans etc. when not in use. • Air-Conditioner Maintenance: If the AC’s are cleaned regularly, then efficiency will increase considerably and will help save a substantial amount of energy. • Implementation of a purchasing policy: So as to ensure that products with a 5 star or 4 star rating ,under the BEE Energy Star system, are bought . This will ensure that new products are as energy efficient as possible. • These are the estimated savings in terms of kWh and INR.

  12. Low Cost Measures • Installation of Sub Meters in various parts of the school. This will help us closely monitor our energy performance. • Replacement of Existing Water Pumps & Improvement of Operation Time: This will increase efficiency and will help us save large amounts of energy. In fact, initial estimates show that we could save almost INR 19,000 & 4750 kWh. • Improvement of Power Factor: This will help us increase the amount of energy we can actually consume per 1000 kVA. This investment can be easily regained within one year due to the PF incentives offered (Almost INR 75000 per annum) • Lighting Upgrades: If the lighting of the school is upgraded(i.e. Bulbs to CFL’s etc.), we could save up to 27,900 kWh per year (INR 1,11,600.0)+13300 kWh (INR 53,200.0). • These are the estimated savings in terms of kWh and INR.

  13. What we have done till now • After meeting with the representatives of ICF International on 11th November, 2009, we have decided that we would first implement the ELCMs along with the installation of Sub Meters (an LCM). • A new committee of EnCom members has been setup, (‘The Energy Audit Committee’) under the EnCom, to look into the implementation. • An official circular has been sent to teachers and to the support staff to inform them about the financial and the environmental benefits of Energy Conservation. • A strict maintenance schedule for the air conditioners has been drawn up. • Sub meters have been installed in various parts of the school and the Energy Audit committee members have been regularly taking readings. We have been able to identify the crucial areas and are now working towards reducing energy consumption in these areas.

  14. Conclusion • The implementation of the ELCM’s has been completed and we are now analyzing the results and are taking appropriate measures to reduce the energy consumption of the key areas. • Except for a few challenges, the implementation till now has been as per schedule. We hope that the project will be a success and that we would be able to set up a replicable model of efficient energy management for various other schools.

Survey: • As no official record of the number of tube lights, fans etc. was kept by the school’s head office, the data had to be collected by manually counting all lights, fans etc. • The data from various parts of the school was collected by a group of 8 EnCom members who stayed back after school for almost 4 weeks for the same. • We collected data from various parts of the school by making teams of 2 students each. Each team was assigned 2 areas from where they were supposed to collect the data. Back

The Energy Audit Committee • This is a committee which has been setup under the EnCom to look into the implementation of the ‘Efficient Energy Management’ Project. • It is headed by Ahaan Mohan, Joint Secretary, EnCom and the members are hand picked students who had helped in the initial data collection. • All committee members have been assigned specific wings where they have to spread awareness and take sub meter readings (every month). Depending on the energy consumption of a particular area, it will be given a rating and a rank and the members will work towards improving the same. Back
