Winter Preparations for Homeowners Heating System Have a professional service your furnace Replace you’re the furnace air filter Clear obstacles fromheating vents Clean heating vents on the outside. Are any items inside the vents? Check and/or install Carbon Monoxide Detectors within 15 feet of all bedrooms. There are inexpensive units that simply plug into an outlet. They save lives. Air Conditioning Clean your AC unit of any debris –like pine cones, leaves etc Cover your AC unit to protect it from wet leaves, other debris, that contributes to rust. Window units: remove them and store them for winter. Plumbing Outside Faucets: Turn off water supply if necessary inside the home Consider an insulated cover for the exterior faucets Insulate exposed water or drain pipingwith foam inall in uninsulated attic, crawlspacesetc Insulation Insulate exterior outlets and switch plates with inexpensive foam sealing gasket Insulate your hot water tank with an insulatingavailable at hardware stores. Windows and Doors Test your windows for air leaks, using a candle or incense stick Cover any leaks on windows. Cheap and easy to use. Install weatherstripping on any leaking doors. Roof Visually check your roof for missing or damaged shingles. Have them removed. Visually check flashing around chimneys and other roof projections. Make sure gutters and downspouts are clean

Drain your outside faucets by opening them up Outside Faucets: Turn off water supply if necessary inside the home Consider an insulated cover for the exterior faucets Winter Home Emergency Kit Start an emergency food storage,if you have one substitute old cans for newer ones Keep Batteries and Flashlights close by. Select an alternative heat source Have blankets on hand, pillows, extra clothing Tools and Materials for Emergency Repairs Communication: cheap cell phone, Walkie Talkies Miscellaneous Find ice scrapers and snow shovels Add antifreeze to your car – just get the car checklist
