  2. Legend: Town of Maycomb in the early 1930s. “Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it” (p. 30).

  3. Legend: Children outside old schoolhouse with teacher. “Hours of wintertime had found me in the tree house, looking over at the schoolyard, spying on multitudes of children through a two-power telescope, learning their games” (p. 75).

  4. Legend: Children playing football. “When it healed, and Jem’s fears of never being able to play football were assuaged, he was seldom self-conscious about his injury” (p. 1).

  5. Legend: Black women cooking for whites. “We lived on the main street in town- Atticus, Jem and I, plus Calpurnia our cook.”

  6. Legend: Maycomb County courthouse. “Atticus’s office in the courthouse contained little more than a hat rack, a spittoon, a checkerboard and an unsullied Code of Alabama.”
