Industry Overview • Approximately 18 million vehicles on Canadian roads • Retail size of aftermarket estimated at over $15.6 billion in 2002 (which includes maintenance and repair, and gasoline stations): $9.3 billion in parts and $6.3 billion in services. This is an increase of 5.6 percent over 2001(DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc. 2003 )

  11. Industry Sector Human Resource Study • For the purposes of the study, the Canadian automotive repair and service sector consists of four sub-sectors: • Automotive Service Repair • Collision Repair • Motorcycle Repair • Parts Wholesaler

  20. Interactive Distance Learning • Satellite-based training broadcast daily • Over 150 courses have been developed • Technical and non-technical training for those licensed and working in the industry • Offers two-way interaction between student and instructor

  21. Collision Repair IDL Project – Phase II Project Objective • To make available to the Canadian Collision Repair sector, convenient, cost effective and high quality technical and non-technical training

National Essential Skills Strategy • Examine the essential skills of industry occupations, e.g. reading, document use, computer use related skills • Benchmark the current essential skills levels of the workforce • Identify strategies to integrate essential skill training components to existing curriculum

National Essential Skills Strategy • Information from essential skill profiles and national benchmarking will be used to: • Communicate to stakeholders existing levels and those required • Manufacturers • Education system • Industry re professional development • Additional profiles and assessment tools are being developed under phase II of the project

Professional Development Skills Assessment Tool • Access to needs assessment questions from 34 key automotive industry occupations • Assessment tests are randomly created from over twelve thousand questions • Automatic links to industry’s best available training sources • Available in both French and English • Secure, encrypted participant profiles and result histories online www.carsability.ca

Career Information Resources • The “Future Is Wide Open” career information kit provides resources for young people, educators, parents and industry. • Reference Guide – 45 occupations described • Educator’s Guide – Learning activities • Industry Presentation Guide – Helpful tips for industry to promote itself • CD-ROM and Web Site – interactive tools

  27. National Accreditation Program • College post-secondary motive power programs can apply to challenge the accreditation evaluation process. • Currently there are 27 college programs that have National Accreditation status across Canada
