  1. FIRST Robotics Competition Team 2199 Robo-Lions 2019 Build and Competition Season Preview

  2. Robo-Lions “Everyone’s an Engineer – One Team” Philosophy • Team Members may have specialties • Computer Engineer (SW and HW) • Electro-Mechanical Engineer • Business / Marketing Engineer • But everyone is a General Engineer • Team Members will do whatever is needed at the time • Computer engineers will drill metal if needed • EM engineers will create pit decorations if needed • Biz-Mark engineers will turn wrenches if needed • “I’m just an XXX and can’t do that” is not acceptable

  3. 4. Team Attendance • Academics is #1 • If grades suffer stop coming to robotics until they improve • Robotics is your #1 sport / activity during build and competition season! • Other sports / activities are #2! • Work your social life around robotics • Not the other way around!

  5. Build Team Attendance • Build Team = Electro-Mechanical + Computer Engineers (+ Biz/Mark Engineers as needed) • While it would be great if every Build team member could make every meeting, we realize that is impossible • We ask that you make as many as you can • Continuity of effort is very important! • On problematic weeks try to satisfy that week’s hourly floor (see later) • Exams • Weddings, Funerals, … • If you are having issues, please talk to us! We will help you out as best we can!

  6. Business / Marketing Engineering Team Attendance • Like build team, # and length on PR meetings depends on progress on tasks • Negotiated by Business / Marketing Engineering Team and mentors • Key Tasks and completion dates are firm!!

  7. Communication • Read Your Emails!!!!! • #1 way communication method from/by mentors • It is expected that you will monitor daily and respond where appropriate. • Monitor “Discord” for Team Leader Info • It is expected that you: • Check the server daily! • Invite Code: mdWPrDc • Communicate “Status and Direction” • Communicate with team leaders before meeting ends or use Trello to record progress on various tasks

  8. Expected Behavior • Team members are expected to behave professionally at all times • Respect teammates, mentors, and yourselves • Team camaraderie is expected but not to the point it becomes a social event • Work groups of 3 or less • No PDA rule (Personal Displays of Affection) • Hand holding, teasing, touching, … • No extended discussions of video games, apps, favorite music, comedians, etcetera • Seek out team leads or mentors if you have completed all your tasks

  9. Build Season

  10. What We Are Trying to Accomplish in Build Season • Build Two Robots to Play 2019 Game in 46 Days / 6.6 weeks • Prototype / Practice Robot • Low/Medium level of workmanship • Used for practice and to prototype/refine systems and programming • Functionally the same as the competition robot • Same SW code for both robots • Competition Robot • High level of workmanship • Put in a bag on February 19th for • 1st Competition in Haymarket VA on March 1-3 • 2nd Competition in Owings Mills MD on March 15-17 • If qualified, District Competition in Fairfax VA on April 10-13 • If qualified, Championship in Detroit MI on April 24-27 • Hands off competition robot except 6 hours allowed for modifications in the 7 days prior to all competitions

  11. How We Do That • A well defined process and schedule that utilizes parallel efforts by sub-teams to accomplish the overall team’s objectives on time • Read Game Manual Cover to Cover • Determine Strategy to Win Game • Determine requirements for Robot to achieve Winning Strategy • Allocate requirements to subsystems • Determine priority order of subsystems • Establish Space Allocations for Subsystems • Subsystems cannot occupy the same space • Perform research on competition • Build in 3 Days • Chief Delphi - https://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/portal.php • Scouting parties – Watch streaming video of Regional and District Competition • Design, build, and program subsystems in priority order Systems Engineering Subsystems Engineering

See Discord for link. • Create an account • Make, move, edit tasks on the boards • Add comments • Can be assigned to tasks • Would really help us team leaders out! • Boards are publicly viewable – please check to see how tasks are going. • https://trello.com/robolions • Team leadership will be responsible for making sure this is kept up to date with what’s happening (end-of-meeting meeting) • Will not be updated live, but should be up-to-date by the end of the meetings.
