The Wrong Kinds of Zeal • Zeal for the Unimportant & Inconsequential • Zeal For a “Party” • Zeal For Traditions Within the Church • Zeal for the church as an Institution • Zeal for temporal success • (1 Corinthians 13:3) • And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. (NKJV)

Do you have a zeal for the Lord? • (Acts 5:40-41) • And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. (NKJV)

  4. Do you have a zeal for the Lord? • (Acts 8:4) • Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word. (NKJV)

  5. Do you have a zeal for the Lord? • (Acts 4:32) • Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. (NKJV)

Do you have a zeal for the Lord? • On a DAILY basis, the first century church: • They worshipped together (Ac. 2:46) • They ate together (Ac. 2:46) • They obviously spent time together (Ac. 2:46) • They evangelized, because people were being saved daily (Ac. 2:47) • There was daily teaching (Ac. 5:42) • There was daily study (Ac. 17:11) • There was daily encouragement (Heb. 13:3) • There was daily debate, exchanging of ideas (Ac. 17:17; 19:9) • They were focused on the benevolent needs of others every day (not just at a business or emergency meeting (Ac. 6:1) • They were focused on the work of the church every day (1 Cor. 15:31)

  7. Do you have a zeal for the Lord? • (Numbers 25:2) • They invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. (NKJV)

Do you have a zeal for the Lord? • (Numbers 25:6-8) • And indeed, one of the children of Israel came and presented to his brethren a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. Now when Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose from among the congregation and took a javelin in his hand; and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stopped among the children of Israel. (NKJV)

  9. Do you have a zeal for the Lord? • (Numbers 25:13) • 'and it shall be to him and his descendants after him a covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was zealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.'" (NKJV)

  10. Are you as zealous for the Lord as He is for you? • (Romans 5:8) But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (NKJV)

  11. Are you as zealous for the Lord as He is for you? • (Philippians 2:7) • but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. (NKJV)

  12. Are you as zealous for the Lord as He is for you? • (Matthew 8:20) • And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head." (NKJV)

  13. Are you as zealous for the Lord as He is for you? • (Ephesians 5:25) • Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, (NKJV)

  14. Are you as zealous for the Lord as He is for you? • (2 Corinthians 11:28) • besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: my deep concern for all the churches. (NKJV)

  15. Are you as zealous for the Lord as He is for you? • (Revelation 3:15) • "I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. (NKJV)
