  1. Treatment Options for Kidney Cancer

  2. Current Treatment Options for Kidney Cancer There are a number of options for cancer treatment currently available for kidney cancer, which can be broadly divided into two main categories: surgical and nonsurgical. Surgical treatments include radical nephrectomy (removal of the entire kidney), partial nephrectomy (removal of part of the kidney), and cryoablation (destruction of the tumor with extreme cold). Nonsurgical treatments include ablation therapies (destruction of the tumor with heat or other energy sources), embolization therapies (blockage of blood flow to the tumor), and targeted therapies (drugs that target specific molecules involved in cancer cell growth). The best treatment option for an individual patient depends on a variety of factors, including the stage and grade of the tumor, the patient’s overall health and fitness, and personal preferences. Treatment decisions should be made by a team of specialists who are experienced in treating kidney cancer.

  3. Clinical Trials for New Kidney Cancer Treatments • The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is the government organization responsible for cancer research in the United States. NCI’s Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD) conducts and supports clinical trials for new cancer treatments, including kidney cancer treatments. • There are different types of clinical trials, each with its own purpose. Some clinical trials test new treatments to find out if they are safe and effective. Other trials test new ways to deliver treatments or new combinations of drugs. And still, other trials focus on the quality of life or symptom management. • Kidney cancer clinical trials are an important part of developing new treatments for this disease. Through clinical trials, researchers can learn whether a new treatment is safe and effective and how well it works. Clinical trials also provide an opportunity to study different aspects of care, such as side effects from treatment, how patients manage their symptoms, and quality-of-life issues.
