  2. Growing Cadet DemandLeadership, Activities, Expectations What is the message you send about language, who does language outreach, and how often do you present this message? Two messages: “Studying Arabic will be valuable to you in the future, so take the opportunity to learn the language now.” “Language proficiency and cross cultural understanding are important for military, business and overall educational purposes.” Who does the outreach - Dean of Academics ML&C Department Head and Faculty Office of International Programs Admissions, VMI catalogue, VMI quarterly publications, VMI website Alumni chapters How often – continuously!

  3. Growing Cadet DemandLeadership, Activities, Expectations • What activities did you do to reinforce the above? • Through a well developed Academic curriculum. Language requirements > minors. 15 upper-division Arabic classes > majors. • Through special programs – “Life After Language”, Model Arab League, U.S./Arab Policymakers Conference, Undergraduate Research and Honors Theses, etc. • Through study abroad fairs and meetings. • Through classroom presentations and special speakers. • During Admissions events and matriculation fairs. • Through visibility and self-feeding marketing of Arabic. • Through peer-recruiting. • Through prestige associated with difficult assessment test. • Through mailings illustrating opportunities.

Growing Cadet DemandLeadership, Activities, Expectations • What are the expectations regarding language study among your cadets and how do you establish them? • Cadets expect to become proficient in the language – that is their goal. • Cadets expect to master the four skills through content-based courses and cultural interaction on site. • Cadets expect cultural interaction on site. • We provide the curriculum and extra-curricular activities to help them achieve their goal.

Growing Cadet DemandLeadership, Activities, Expectations • What is needed to sustain all of this? • $$$ for tenure lines. • $$$ to attract and keep the best faculty. • $$$ for curricular development. • $$$ for faculty development and visiting professors. • $$$ for technology. • Release time for faculty research and the tenure process. • Healthy academic/political climate: Continuation of language requirements.
