MICROCLINE • QUARTZ var. CHALCEDONY • FLUORITE • CALCITE • GYPSUM var. ALABASTER • PYRITE • GYPSUM var. SATIN SPAR • HEMATITE • HALITE • GRAPHITE • QUARTZ var. MILKY • TALC • GYPSUM var. SELENITE • MICA var. BIOTITE PLEASE READ!! These mineral samples have been donated by the physical science teachers. Please be respectful to these samples. Do not peel off the numbers and if one falls off please let me know so it may be replaced.

  2. Test Your Mineral COLOR Document the color(s) your mineral exhibits. STREAK Carefully use the white and black plates to test for streak color. Rub the smooth part of the plate against your mineral and write down the color it makes. LUSTER Use the magnifying glasses to write down whether your mineral is Metallic (shiny, chrome) Nonmetallic (glossy) Earthy (clay-like appearance) HARDNESS Use the following test to approximate the hardness of the mineral. Start with your fingernail less than 2.5 If no mark, then try the penny 3-4 If no mark, then try the glass 5ish If no mark, then try the steel nail. 6-7

  3. 5. MAGNETIC Use the magnet to check if the mineral is magnetic. Write yes or no. 6. CHEMICAL TEST – CHECKING FOR CARBON DIOXIDE Put on the safety glasses and pour one drop of a weak acid (vinegar) on your mineral. Observe with the magnifying glasses if it bubbles or not. Write yes or no/ 7. UNUSUAL/OTHER PROPERTIES What other properties does your mineral have. List them. 8. YOUR GUESS After completing the various tests, make a guess of what your mineral is. This may be easier if completed once all samples have been tested. Take the time to properly complete the chart. You will be graded on the results from each test, your guess, and returning all the minerals in good manner. This assignment can be done on paper or emailed to me.

  4. EACH STUDENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PERFORMING THE LAB AND FILLING OUT THIS CHART. You may copy it down on paper or send it to me electronically when completed.
