  1. Universal Flu Vaccine May Be On the Horizon Article By Amber Dance LA Times, October 24, 2011

  2. Replacing Flu Shot • Two different drug companies, BIONDVAX and SEEK are testing formulations of a universal flu vaccine in hopes of a successful version coming to the market in upcoming years. They hope this vaccine could last for for several years, and replace the flu shot. • BIONDVAX vice-president, Wayne Rudolph says it could be ready as early as 2014. • Chief executive, Gregory Stoloff, from Seek says it could be ready in 3 to 5 years

  3. Influenza • Studded with nail-shaped proteins called hemagglutinin. • Hemagglutinin is constantly morphing. Which distracts immune system from the less variable parts underneath. • Once exposed, the immune system is primed to recognize the virus, and fight off that particular strand.

  4. Annual Vaccine • Flu strains are constantly changing which creates a “cat-and-mouse” game between the people and the virus. • Each winter the WHO and US Food/Drug Administration decide which 3 flu strands they thing will be most common in the next season • By the time flu season rolls around the following autumn, the three viruses picked, might not be the right ones anymore. Rudolph, says the annual vaccine is 30% to 60% effective.

  5. Biondvax • Chose 9 unchanging pieces of the flu virus’s proteins and linked them together. • Causes immune system to make antibodies that will attack the virus. • 200 people have received the shot and blood tests show their immune system responded to the vaccine

  6. Seek • Selected 4 pieces of the virus’ internal machinery and designed them to match as many kinds of flu as possible • In the latest trial, 30 people have received the universal flu shot, and 40 other received an inactive placebo. • 3 weeks later, scientists placed a mild strain of the flu virus into their nose. • Those with the placebo came down the “proper flu symptoms.” Those with the real vaccine suffered minimal effects. Blood of those with the real vaccine also had immune cells that attack all kinds of flu viruses.

  7. Universal Vaccine Hunt • Inovio Pharmeceuticals Inc. of Blue Bell, PA, has invented a DNA-based vaccine.
