  3. Artistic Ideas Spread • INVASIONS OF ITALY 1494-1527 • Artists & writers left for safer life in N. Europe

  4. Northern Writers Try to Reform Society • Humanists examined the Church, critical of it’s failure to inspire • Christian humanism= reform society w/ education • Believed in Christianity of the heart, all ppl should read the Bible

  5. Elizabethan Age • England, mid-1500s, after Queen Elizabeth I, ruled from 1558-1603 • William Shakespeare- most famous writer, greatest playwright • Inspired by the classics • Understanding of human beings, used dramatic conflict • Famous tragedies: Macbeth, Hamlet, Othello, & Romeo & Juliet, and comedies: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, & the Taming of the Shrew

  6. Printing Spreads Ideas • 1440, Johann Gutenberg= printing press–produce books quickly & cheaply • Printed a complete Bible • 1st time so many ppl could buy them

  7. Legacy of the Renaissance • Artistic & social change • Break w/ ideals focused around the Church • Dignity of the individual rise of democratic ideas
